Do-it-yourself shelves in the dressing room
A separate room for clothes is a great opportunity to always keep your things in order. How to make shelves in the dressing room with your own hands will be discussed in our article.
to contents ↑Looking for a place
Before you make shelves in the dressing room with your own hands, it is useful to decide on the room itself. Where is the best place to make a clothes room? It depends on a few things:
- the size of the apartment;
- room layouts;
- the presence of pantries and niches.
In this case, you should pay attention to the location of the wiring - the room will need lighting, so you have to take care of the outlet or switch. But the window in the dressing room is not necessary. As for the sizes, they also depend on the area of the apartment. If you can fence off a room of about 6 square meters. m - wonderful. But not everyone can afford it, but a corner of 3 square meters. m, if desired, can be distinguished even in a small apartment. If you organize the space correctly, that’s enough.

Organization Options
If you have a pantry of a suitable size, it is best to organize a dressing room there. There are only two questions left:
- Do I need a door;
- how to arrange furniture.
Pantry
The door to the dressing room can perform several functions. It separates the rooms, and in addition, you can hang a mirror on it. But in principle, it is not mandatory - the doorway can be issued in another way. For example, put a screen or hang a curtain.
Important! If you have allocated a separate room for clothes between the bedroom and the bathroom (which is considered an ideal location), make sure that it has two entrances - from the bedroom and from the bathroom.
Niche
A large niche is a ready-made wardrobe. With your own hands, it remains only to make shelves and hangers. The recess in the wall has only one drawback - the opening is too large. But you can reduce it by installing a drywall partition.
Important! For a large room, a very convenient option is to separate with panels not only a niche, but also a small piece of the area adjacent to it. Then you will receive a cabinet, a place for drawers and baskets, and a wall for a mirror. If a finished niche is not provided for when planning, and the area of a room allows you to make it, then everything is in your hands. Use our workshops to easy to make a drywall niche.
Part of the corridor
If you do not have storage rooms, but there is a large corridor, you can arrange a dressing room there. True, the long and narrow entrance hall into which all the doors go is not very suitable for such a purpose, too narrow aisle remains. But if the corridor is square or in the form of a wide rectangle - why not allocate a few square meters for clothes and linen?
Bedroom
In the large bedroom you can also find a suitable place for a dressing room. But for this, the angle will have to be highlighted somehow. There are two options:
- fenced off with drywall;
- organize space with a cabinet and shelving.
The first option requires thorough intervention.In addition, if you want to move the dressing room to another place, you will have to make repairs again. If you allocate a zone for clothes simply with cabinets, you can rearrange them at any time.
to contents ↑What will we store?
When deciding what to make shelves in the dressing room from, determine what exactly will be in your closets. Perhaps not only shelves will be needed. There should be a place in the dressing room for many things:
- clothes;
- linen;
- shoes;
- bags;
- accessories.
For linen, of course, shelves or drawers are needed. As for clothes, for some things you will probably need hangers, so it’s better to immediately think about where exactly to place them. How to arrange shoes? Here, as they say, options are possible. Fit:
- lower shelves of the general rack;
- special low rack with a drawer in which you can store leather care items:
- hanging organizer;
- just a corner on the floor - since the dressing room serves for the sole purpose, shoes will not bother anyone, however, this option is good only for large rooms.
to contents ↑Important! We will deal with bags and accessories. Their storage depends on the species. For example, a bag with a long belt can be put on a shelf or hung on a special hanger. The same goes for belts. But for some accessories, of course, you will need a box or a special shelf. Do not forget about hats, caps and scarves.
Types of furniture
Since everyone has his own things, then you can store them in different ways. The necessary minimum of furniture for the dressing room consists of only three positions:
- hangers;
- shelving;
- mirrors.
In a small room, you can do this. But there are other types of furniture for storing things:
- drawers;
- baskets.
Important! Subject to availability do it yourself and put a dressing table or even a dressing table, as well as a bench or chair. But you need to take care that they do not interfere with the dressing room to perform its main function.
How to put?
There are several options for arranging shelves in the clothes room. Classic two:
- L-shaped;
- U-shaped.
They are most effective. In the middle of the room, for example, there can be a bench or a chest so that you can change shoes.
to contents ↑We make racks
Shelves - the main element of the room for clothes. It is best to make racks from them. Different materials are suitable for this:
- wood;
- plywood;
- Chipboard;
- Plastic.
Wood is a classic material for such products. In construction stores, you can easily find boards of any size, which are quite simple to process and varnish. Sheet plywood is also great. It can be of different thicknesses, but for shelves it is desirable that the sheet is not thinner than 1.5 cm.
Important! Since the air in the dressing room should be dry, and the temperature should be normal, any rocks are suitable - from rosewood to pine.
Despite the fact that wood and plywood have considerable advantages, the most popular material for furniture now is laminated particleboard. Such a stove has its advantages:
- attractive appearance;
- strength;
- affordable price.
to contents ↑Important! There is, however, a rather significant minus - without special equipment it is quite difficult to cut it beautifully, so it is better to contact the workshop.
Wooden shelves
In principle, the manufacturing process of shelves from different materials looks about the same. However, there are requirements for a tree:
- Boards can be of the second grade.
- Future shelves should be well dried.
- Workpieces must be clean.
Racks
Shelves in the dressing room must be attached to something. There are several options - the choice depends on the size of the dressing room and the length of the shelves:
- directly to the walls using wooden battens or a metal profile;
- on racks.
In the first case, horizontal load-bearing elements are attached to the walls, boards are laid on them. But you can make racks:
- from metal pipes;
- from wooden slats.
Important! Metal pipes are stronger, but there are subtleties - you will need either metal drills or a welding machine, and sometimes both. It’s easy to get tools now, but you need to be able to work with them. Wooden slats in all respects are more convenient, even a novice master who takes up his first product will cope with them.
Instruments
Without tools, shelves for the dressing room with your own hands, of course, can not be done. Therefore, everything necessary is better prepared in advance:
- hammer drill;
- miniature milling machine;
- jigsaw;
- Circular Saw;
- level;
- hammer;
- Screwdriver Set;
- drill or screwdriver;
- roulette;
- pencil;
- brush.
Do not forget about additional materials and fasteners. You need:
- varnish;
- wood putty;
- sandpaper;
- self-tapping screws;
- furniture corners.
We prepare the details
Before you make shelves in the dressing room, you need to prepare the boards:
- Determine the length of the boards - it depends on the width of the rack.
- Mark the workpiece.
- Saw it.
- Strip the surface.
- Seal the chips, if any, with putty.
- Sand the board.
- If desired, nothing prevents you from immediately coating the workpiece with varnish, but you can do this later.
to contents ↑Important! There can also be curly shelves in the dressing room - for this you need a milling machine, but in principle, you can also cut curved lines with a jigsaw.
Shelves on a metal profile
A do-it-yourself wardrobe rack can be without vertical parts at all. But you need to be very careful about the layout of the wall - all lines should turn out to be strictly horizontal:
- Mark one of the corners from below the height of the shelf.
- Make the same mark on the other side, as well as on the walls to which the ends of the shelves will be attached.
- Connect the dots with lines and check the horizontal.
- Also mark the rest of the walls to the very top.
- On the lines, mark the places for the holes for the dowels.
- Attach the profile - it must hold firmly.
- Where there will be corners of shelves adjacent to the walls, set the corners.
- Install the shelves and attach them to the profile.
Rail rack
Wooden slats are an excellent material for shelving. Of there must be four. If at your fingertips you find old bookshelves or unnecessary cabinets from an outdated kitchen set - half the job is done:
- Prepare slats (sand and coat with stain).
- Mark the places where the slats will be attached to the wall - just one mount from the top is enough, but you can make two - above and below.
- Designate space for shelves.
- Put the shelf on the end and ask the assistant to hold.
- Screw to the place where the shelf will be attached to the slats, furniture corners.
- Screw the rail.
- Attach another shelf the same way.
- At the end of this stage, you will get one rail with shelves screwed onto it.
- Screw the second rail.
- Turn the rack over and attach the third and fourth rails in sequence.
- Place the rack against the wall.
- Screw it to the wall.
What else to put in the room?
Shelves for linen, shirts, hats and shoes you have already made. But where to put on coats, jackets, elegant dresses, men's suits and the like? They are certainly better to hang on their shoulders. The most convenient option is a barbell. It can be stationary or retractable. But there are other ways to store these things:
- Christmas tree hanger;
- pantograph;
- several hangers in different places - for example, the master and guest, or separately for coats and elegant clothes.
to contents ↑Important! Nothing prevents the attachment of several rods at different levels. For example, on the top you will hang evening clothes, and on the bottom - everyday things. You can put a separate hanger for children's things, if you have a dressing room for the whole family.
How to arrange clothes?
Wardrobe is good because it allows you to keep everything at hand. You do not have to look for anything. But in any home there are things that are worn every day, and those that are rarely worn. The first should be closer so that they are easier to get.
to contents ↑Important! It is necessary to take into account the fact that outerwear should hang as close to the exit as possible. This is especially true for large rooms. And to facilitate your choice of clothes from the shelves, find out some practical ways to fold clothes neatly.
A corner for different little things
It is not worth littering a single room. This also applies to dressing rooms. But still in every house there are things that are needed not every day, but are dear to the owners. In the dressing room can be:
- shelf with photo albums;
- jewelry box - our workshops will help youmake a box yourself;
- a cosmetic table (subject to good lighting);
- a shelf for storing various household items, such as spare sponges, brushes;
- a shelf for storing spare blankets and other bedding, which is used mainly for guests.
There are definitely items that you should definitely not keep in the dressing room:
- unpacked products;
- chemical substances;
- rags and rags (except the one used to clean the dressing room itself).
to contents ↑Important! With a shortage of space in the apartment, of course, you can allocate a shelf in the dressing room, where several closed boxes with baby food or closed cans with canned goods can stand for some time. They will not cause any harm to clothing. But, for example, a box with potatoes is not the most suitable neighbor for a velvet skirt and just ironed duvet covers.
Stock footage
It is important that everything in this corner of your home is always clean, dry and ready to use. Dirty things have no place in the dressing room. This applies not only to clothing, but also to shoes. Keep your clothes clean and shelves that you can do yourself can help.
