DIY spiral staircase

When building a private house, arranging a spiral staircase with your own hands is far from rare. This design is compact, practical and looks very stylish, transforming the most modest and unpretentious interior. And most importantly - the home master will be able to assemble such a ladder himself. To do this, it is enough to study the principles of design and calculation of a screw structure, and it is not difficult to master the practical part.

Specificity

Consider what distinguishes a helical structure from similar products:

  • The steps are arranged in a spiral. This makes it possible to make the staircase compact. However, it is due to the compactness that the ascent and descent are not entirely convenient. If you look at such a structure from above, it resembles a flower with petals, slightly entering one after another.
  • The central part of a wooden or metal spiral staircase with their own hands is a support, it is also a guide axis. Steps are fixed to the axis.
  • Another difference from other varieties of stair structures is that each of the steps is a running one.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before you make a spiral staircase with your own hands, be sure to weigh all the pros, cons and possible risks.

The pros include:

  • Compact size. The helical model, unlike the marching one, takes up little space. In addition, when compared with an attached or folding model, moving around it is much more convenient.
  • Beauty. The helical lift looks very aesthetically pleasing, especially if you use soft transitions and roundings during construction.
  • Low cost. Materials for such a design will require a little, the cost will be small.

Minuses:

  • Difficulties in lifting goods, especially bulky ones.
  • Not very convenient movement. This is especially true for people with disabilities, children and the elderly. In this case, the construction can become not only uncomfortable, but also unsafe.

Applicable Materials

In order to make a spiral staircase with your own hands, you need to choose the materials. The most common options are:

  • Wood.
  • Metal (welded or forged).
  • The combination of several materials.

Features:

  • For a wooden structure, a beam of at least 100 mm cross section is used as axial support. An additional fixation of the steps on the kosoura is welcome.
  • As a central axis for a metal structure, pipes or channels are used.
  • In the combined design, the base is metal, and the steps are wooden or MDF. MDF plywood combines perfectly with stainless steel.
  • Do-it-yourself railing for a spiral staircase is best done with plastic, since the material can be easily curved.
  • The forged construction looks most beautiful, but its cost is quite high. As for self-manufacturing, few possess blacksmithing skills.

Important! You can make a spiral climb to the second floor from the finished modules. In this case, metal sections and finished wooden steps are mounted on the base independently.

DIY spiral staircase calculation to the second floor

This part of the project is the most difficult. The degree of comfort and safety of the future product depends on how correctly the drawings are completed.

Designing is carried out in several stages:

  • The area that can be taken under the stairs is determined, and drawings of a spiral staircase are made with metal or wood with their own hands.
  • The minimum size of the hatch on the second floor is 2 m2. The approach to the entrance must be free.
  • The number of steps and their placement are determined. Often steps are made without risers, so it is advisable that they go slightly behind each other in the narrowed part. As a rule, 11-13 steps are enough for a full climb.
  • Given the specifics of the location of the steps, it is necessary for a convenient climb to increase the width of the stairs. The minimum width for a standard helical lift is 1.2 m.

Installing the stand

This is the first moment in the installation of the structure:

  • If the frame is metal, then you need to have welding skills.
  • Wooden racks are fixed with anchor type bolts. It is necessary to take care of the lateral mounting of steps on the kosoura.

Important! A wooden staircase, in addition to fastening on kosoura, can also be done on bolets.

Setting steps

In order for the design to be safe enough, it is important to place the steps correctly. As a rule, a frame is welded under them, exactly tailored to their shape.

You can make it a little simpler: make a support in the form of a rectangular plate. Also a good option is a support made of two metal corner profiles in the form of the letter T, on which steps made of wood or metal are attached. Such a frame makes it possible, if necessary, to adjust the size of the steps.

Railings and fences

Installation of fences is the final stage of the construction of the stairs. With taste, the chosen railing will not only secure, but also decorate the design:

  • The most popular option is the use of metal tubes.
  • The fence looks best when combined with a wooden railing and wrought-iron decor.
  • However, the construction of continuous curved railings from wood is associated with certain difficulties. Therefore, for self-construction, it is desirable to use PVC imitating wood.
