Why do doors dry?

When deciding to re-equip doorways, keep in mind that installing a door in the bathroom and toilet has some specifics, due to the features of these rooms:

• high humidity;
• frequency of use - after all, each family member visits the bathroom several times a day, and each time he opens and closes the doors twice;
• in the bathroom, a person is undressed, and unpleasant odors periodically appear in the toilet, so the bathroom should be warm and good ventilation is needed.

That is, the doors are needed from a material that tolerates high humidity well, and they should stand so that both the hinges, the box, and everything else withstand more mechanical stress. Half the success depends on how correctly you choose the door leaf and what it is attached to. At the same time, installing a door to the bathroom with a threshold has several more features.

Dismantle the old box

First you need to tackle the old box, which, of course, should be removed before you open the catalog and see what manufacturers of repair materials offer you. Installing a door to the bathroom largely depends on what your home is built of. Dismantling is carried out as follows.

Option 1. Brick walls

If the walls are brick, first remove the nails that secure the box to the inserts in the partition. To do this, we hollow out the notches around the hats, and pull the nails with pliers or a nail puller. Next we do this:

1. We saw one vertical beam in half.
2. We remove this bar - as carefully as possible.
3. All other elements will depart on their own, the main thing is to pick them up on time.
4. We take out all the junk in the trash, carefully remove the garbage.

Option 2. Reinforced concrete walls

A metal box requires a slightly different attitude:

1. Cut the pins that hold the box and fittings together.
2. Pry the whole system with a crowbar (you can use a nail clipper) and separate it from the wall - I must say, it will not be very easy.
3. Garbage in this case is less, but it must also be removed immediately.

Choose the door

What kind of doors do you want in your bathroom? Still have not decided? It's time to look into the catalogs, see what is there, try to soberly assess the conditions and see how masterpieces of design ideas fit your room, or you will be more comfortable with the simplest doors.

Important! In fact, this problem should be dealt with after all the other repairs in your bathroom are finished. In any case, it is better to put the box when there is already a bathtub or a shower cabin, otherwise - you may encounter a situation that you simply can’t bring new plumbing into the bathroom.

We measure an aperture

Where to start looking for a new door? Of course, from measurements. Do not wonder.Some believe that the openings in the bathrooms are made to standards, but this is not entirely true, especially since the standard is not one - there are four of them.

You need to measure:

• opening height:
• width
• depth.

In order not to encounter a situation when the purchased door does not want to fall into its designated place, you need to correctly measure the opening. You have already removed the box. The algorithm for further actions looks like this:

1. Scrub the end of the partition to a brick.
2. Remove trash.
3. Measure the width of the opening.
4. Measure the depth considering the finish layer.
5. Measure the height, if there is a nut, consider this.
6. Add 15 mm to all this so that the box crawls into the opening.
7. Calculate the dimensions of the door itself, while remembering that it should be 3-5 mm smaller than the box on each side.

Important! Consider one more circumstance - are you going to change only the door or the door frame too? The box is sold separately, it must be selected or made independently. The box consists of three parts:

• two sidewalls equal to the height of the opening;
• one canvas, cut in half, equal to the width.

What are the doors?

Looking in any catalog, you can easily see that the doors for bathrooms and toilets are not at all the same! They are divided:

• by material;
• by installation method.

Installation method

Designers offer three options for doors for hygienic rooms:

• swinging;
• compartment, that is, sliding;
• cassette tapes.

When deciding on a suitable option, consider the following:

• Hinged - the most common doors that can be seen in most apartments. These are the ones that are installed in new homes - they are cheaper than others and more universal.

Important! The disadvantage is that they require quite a lot of space in the corridor.

• The compartment is much more compact, but they have their own minus - in rooms with high humidity and temperature extremes, the rails along which these doors move can be deformed. However, if you are not going to have a sauna, then why not?
• The cassette doors also slide apart, but the door leaf and the box are a single design, which makes them more convenient for any room, including bathrooms. When the door slides open, it completely goes into the wall.

Important! Minus - the wall section should be wide enough.

Material

For the manufacture of modern doors, several materials are used, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. Doors in the bathroom can be:

• wooden;
• Particleboard and MDF;
• plastic;
• metal-plastic;
• glass.

Wood

Wood is a traditional material that is used to make doors almost as much as there is a custom to close rooms. It has a lot of advantages:

• large price range;
• environmental friendliness;
• durability with proper care;
• ease of installation.

However, in modern bathrooms, wooden doors are not placed very often. The reason is the specific qualities of this material:

• sensitive to high humidity:
• decays;
• deformed;
• troublesome to keep clean.

Important! Rot, of course, can be avoided, since there are antifungal impregnations. But with regard to care - washing wooden surfaces is not that more difficult than plastic ones, but the process takes longer.

Particleboard and MDF

They have the same advantages and disadvantages as wooden ones, with the only difference being that they are cheaper, and they tolerate worse humidity and temperature. A lot depends on how actively you use your bathroom. One person who takes a shower in the mornings and evenings, and rents laundry, can well put such doors. But if you have a large family, in addition, you tend to wash and dry clothes there, you should not risk it - such a door will quickly fail.

Glass

The material is very popular now, and it is mainly doors that make it into bathrooms and toilets. There are a lot of positive qualities:

• very good resistance to moisture and temperature extremes:
• possesses excellent heat-shielding properties;
• better than others protects from noise;
• neutral to household chemicals;
• environmentally friendly;
• a very large assortment, and the glass has a different color and different texture.

Important! Many fear that it is dangerous to install glass doors - the fragility of this material is well known. However, modern panels are made of especially durable glass, which is not so easy to break or damage.

In addition, glass surfaces can be very beautiful, and elements from a wide variety of materials are used for decoration. However, there are no materials without flaws. Glass doors are more expensive than wooden and plastic, and this is their main drawback.

Plastic

For bathrooms, this material is just perfect:

What tools are needed?

Installation of doors to the bathroom and toilet is not the most large-scale construction work that a home foreman has to do. However, they also need several tools:

• hacksaw:
• miter box;
• drill;
• mallet;
• chisel;
• feather drill;
• screwdriver;
• cue ball (fit PZ2 or PH2);
• level;
• knife (construction);
• pencil (better construction, but if not, the most common simple one will do).

Important! It is better to have several mallet of different sizes on the farm.

Fasteners

Without fasteners, this work cannot be done either. Prepare:

• small nails (fasten the glazing bead);
• plastic or wooden substrates;
• silicone sealant;

Mounting Features

Installing the doors to the bathroom and toilet with your own hands in a panel house, as well as in a brick house, depends on how well you manage to deal with the threshold.

Important! Some modern houses don’t put it, but it’s not very convenient, it’s better to have a small ledge. The door protects the apartment from the penetration of water, if suddenly a flood occurs in the bathroom, and also prevents the penetration of cold air into the bathroom itself. At the same time, a gap of about 5 cm should remain between the threshold and the door. Its task is to provide additional ventilation. Therefore, the height of the door will be less than the height of the doorway not by 5, but by 10 cm.

That is, if the standard door has a height of 200 cm, and the opening is 190 cm, you can do two ways:

• add 10 cm to the opening;
• shorten the door.

Important! It must be borne in mind that it is not always possible to increase the opening - for example, in panel houses this is quite difficult to do. And not a door can be cut off without consequences from any door - this does not present a problem if you work with wood, but it is difficult enough when you have glass in front of you. This issue should be resolved before going to the store.

Increase the height of the opening

This is quite simple to do if there is a gypsum base. The process looks like this:

1. Cover the floor and all nearby objects with plastic wrap and prepare a vacuum cleaner.
2. Mark with a pencil which section to cut.
3. Saw it out with a grinder (although you can use a regular saw, the main thing is that the teeth are large).

Important! You can’t cut a wall of asbestos-cement sheets - you will immediately come across steel reinforcement. In these cases, a smaller door is selected or a standard one is shortened.

Reduce the door

For this procedure, a wooden canvas is suitable. This material allows you to save all the properties while reducing size. This can lead to the fact that the interior will not be as stylish as you intended, but the door will fulfill its functions completely. Sometimes you can cut a piece of glass cloth, but this must be clarified with the seller.

Collect box

Before you put the box, which is also called loot, you need to finish the design of the opening. Here you need:

• high-quality waterproofing;
• flat and clean surface.

If the surface is flat, waterproofing will be provided by a special diffusion tape. It must be glued throughout the inside of the opening. It is glued easily, no special compositions are needed for this.

Technologies for installing different boxes:

• To put the box, which is sold assembled, you do not need a lot of time - just attach it with screws and install the door itself. This is the best variant.
• Parts are sometimes purchased separately. In this case, the box is first assembled completely, then installed. When the loot is already standing, it remains to fix the door leaf and fit all the knots so that the door opens well and closes tightly.

Installation procedure

Even if you bought a practically finished box, you need to put it in a certain order:

1. Shorten the racks of the box - they should be 0.5 cm more than the height of the door, if you have a standard door with a height of 2009 mm, then the racks must be shortened to 2005 mm.
2. Cut the top and bottom of the box not 600 mm, while remember to take into account the thickness of the profile and the gaps, if the door is standard.
3. Assemble the profile according to the largest thickness of the box.
4. Remove excess profile pieces from below.
5. Cut the canopies - mark the grooves that are 200-250 mm from the edges. The position depends on which side the door opens. Instead of awnings, loops are often used, it's even easier, because you don’t need to embed them.

Important! It is more convenient to assemble the box on the floor, and put it ready-made.

Cooking the door

The box is ready, but you still have to tinker with the door itself. The process is not very long, but important. You need:

• Insert latch.
• Fasten the hinges.
• Fasten the handle.

To put it, a hole is made at the end. Its depth is equal to the length of the latch. The handle hole is made on both sides of the door with a pen drill. The design is fastened with self-tapping screws. Next, put the handle:

1. We insert a square and fasten it with screws.
2. We put a square into the hole for the latch, fasten it to the door.
3. The second part of the square part was on the other side of the door, we fasten the second part of the handle to it.

Set the door

Before you hang the door leaf, you need to close up all the cracks that almost always appear between the wall and the frame. A very useful thing is polyurethane foam. Just keep in mind that it expands when it dries, so you need to put spacers in the opening. The door should be hung up after the foam has completely dried, that is, not earlier than after six hours, or even after eight.

Important! Despite the fact that the bathroom has a ventilation outlet, this room is not well ventilated, so it’s useful to leave a gap under the door, or make a hole in the door itself.
