How to make a lamp from disks?

If you have a burning desire to make an unusual chandelier from CDs, then follow all the steps in our master class one by one, and you will surely succeed.

Materials:

• CD-ROMs (approximately 1000 pieces).
• Cut circle from fiberboard.
• Steel wire (5 meters long).
• Electric connector (12 pieces).
• Lamp holder.
• Electric wire.
• Switch + plug.
• Fluorescent lamp.
• Rubber feet (about 3 pieces).
• Silicone transparent sticks (2 pieces).

Instruments:

• Drill.
• Pliers.
• Screwdriver.
• Glue gun for silicone.
• Pincers for a piece of wire.
• A simple pencil.
• Compass.
• Triangle ruler.

The list is impressive, but believe me, it costs such an excellent result. Now we will figure out how to apply all this to make a lamp from disks.

Preparatory stage

In order to start making llama from CDs, you need to take into account some useful tips on preparation:

• Before starting work, you need to put together all the prepared parts and check whether all the tools are in stock. If you suddenly find that something is missing, do not panic - the basic materials and tools can be found in every home. The remaining parts can be bought at a local construction store.
• To make such a lamp you will need a lot of disks. If you don’t have so much, then take them from your friends, work colleagues or classmates. We think they will only be in favor, since many want to get rid of unnecessary “trash”, which is a pity to throw away. Therefore, do not be shy, but ask - you need it for a good cause.
• The size of the connector must match the diameter of the steel wire — it must fit freely into the hole in the connector.
• You can buy an already assembled lamp holder kit for a lamp with an electric wire, switch and plug. If you did not find such an option, then do it yourself, relying on your design preferences.

Important! Please note that the electric wire must be at least 2 m long. It’s better to buy more than spend time on an additional trip to the store.

• Any fluorescence is suitable for work energy saving lampwhose power you choose.
• Buy only transparent silicone so that there is no visible place for the material to stick together.
• For work you need to buy the 2 largest sticks.

Make the bottom

When you have checked the readiness of materials for work, you can begin the basic process of manufacturing a lamp from disks:

1. We take a circle from fiberboard and with the help of a compass and a ruler we divide it into 12 equal sectors. We connect the division points to each other to outline the center where the cartridge and steel wire will be inserted.
2. We fasten the rubber legs to the bottom.
3. Using a drill, we drill holes for the cable.
4. With pliers we cut off 6 parts of the steel wire, which should be at least 1 meter.
5. We bend each piece of wire with pliers or a vise.
6. Now the entire construction made must be attached to the bottom of the future lamp. We fix the rubber legs with suitable bolts and a screwdriver, fix the cartridge in the central hole of the circle from the fiberboard.

Important! At this point, be sure to insert the lamp into the cartridge, since then the disks will block access to the cartridge. The cartridge must be located exactly in the center of the lamp. If it is offset to the side, then put it in the correct position.

We make a metal grill and a sphere of disks:

• We fix 6 arcuate pieces of wire, inserting the ends into the hole of the base.
• We wrap the arcs with your hands or tools to the desired shape. We should end up with a construction in the form of a sphere.
• Using the wire cutters, we cut off the excess edges of the wire, we get a grid of 12 wires in the form of a spherical dome.
• Now we are engaged in stringing discs. Fill disks first with 6 occasions that are near the center. The place between the wire and the disk is sealed with silicone from a glue gun. We perform such manipulations until the stacks of discs are 6 cm in height.

Important! You can not close up the first 5 layers of disks, so that later you can easily change the light bulb.

• When we finished stringing the disks on 6 rods at the base, we further string on 6 wires along the edge of the structure, alternating the disks with each other. All 12 metal wires should be strung here.

Important! Each put disk should lie on two adjacent disks. Make sure that the sequence of their correct overlapping is maintained so that they are planted evenly and symmetrically.

The upper part of the lamp:

• When the disk stacks have reached 26 cm, we wrap each metal end to the center of the structure, cutting off all excess material.
• Now, pinching the edges of the wire, divide the circle into 12 equal sectors. On each of them we mark 2 points for installing an electrical connector for the cable. As a result - 24 holes should turn out.

Important! Remember to make sure that the holes fit your connectors.

• In order to pull out 12 connectors, we disassemble the connector.
• We collect the top of the structure. We put the connectors on the wires and fasten the uppermost disk on top using bolts and a screwdriver.

Everything, the lamp from the CD-ROM is ready to use! Now you can turn it on and enjoy the pleasant dim lights!

Important! If you want to make a multi-tube lamp, then you need to connect the lamp to a double switch, where the wires from all the bulbs will collect one core in three strands. One wire must be connected to zero, and the other two to the two remaining wires.

How to make a “Killer whale” picture from a CD?

Why not make a picture of the disc with your own hands? Now we will tell you in detail how easy it is to arrange one of the options. In this master class, everything is described in more than detail, so you will not have additional questions.

So, we need:

• Three-layer cardboard or a piece of plywood.
• CD discs and their boxes.
• Stationery knife.
• Scissors.
• Ruler.
• Pliers.
• Watercolor and stained glass paints.
• Printed or hand-drawn drawing.
• Polymer glue.

We begin to create a picture “Killer whale” from disks:

1. Determine the size of our picture. For example, take a diameter of 50 cm. After that, take a cardboard of a suitable size and draw two circles - a large and a small one inside it. In our case, the outer diameter of the circle is 50 cm, and the inner is 43 cm. The resulting rim will serve as a frame for the future picture. The inner circle can be cut both at this stage and a little later - it is up to you to decide.
2. Now we are looking on the Internet for a suitable picture with a killer whale image in black and white, print it on the printer and carefully cut it out.We put the image in the inner circle to check the size.
3. On the cardboard we circle the killer whale and cut the blank.
4. Since we will use the mosaic for our picture, it is necessary to lay out parts of the disks in an arbitrary order, leaving gaps, and then fill the voids with stained glass paints.
5. We spread the mosaic from the disks. We take a black box from the CD and use a stationery knife to cut out strips to get individual pieces. Using pliers, break off parts from the black packaging and glue it on cardboard, forming part of the killer whale.
6. According to the same pattern, we cut out the killer whale belly and paint it with white paint.
7. Now we need to make the sea - the background of the picture. We take the disk in hand, cut it into two parts with an office knife. Now it is clearly seen that the surface of the disk consists of three layers - two outer transparent coatings and a foil in the middle.
8. Next, you need to separate the layers of plastic to get two. The foil should remain on each of the layers of the disc. From this layer we will lay out the mosaic.
9. With a clerical knife, we cut a part of the disk with shiny foil into parts of different sizes and shapes.
10. Glue the mosaic sea around the killer whale, filling the entire diameter of the circle.
11. Stained-glass paints fill the voids between the mosaic. Do not be afraid that the paint after drying will be a slightly different color - this is completely normal.
12. Using table napkins, we glue the protruding edge so that the cardboard is not visible.
13. Glue the black pieces of the disk box to the edge of the whole picture. As a result, you should get a black rim around the mosaic sea.
14. We cover the gaps between the black parts of the rim with paint.

DIY table made of disks

Using CDs, you can decorate an old table that has long been idle due to its unattractiveness.

Step-by-step algorithm of actions:

• We cut disks into small parts. A mosaic for decorating a table will need about 25 disks.
• Glue disc fragments onto the table, alternating the front and back sides. So we get a beautiful combination and an interesting modulation of disk rays.

Important! It is better to start laying out the mosaic from the center, moving to the edge of the table surface.

• We begin to form a perfectly even edge. To do this, we take the usual construction putty and cover it with all the gaps of the mosaic, and remove the excess with a damp cloth or cloth.
• After waiting a bit, cover the surface of the table with 2 layers of acrylic varnish.
• Leave a fresh mosaic overnight until completely dry.
