Restoration of an old floor lamp using decoupage technique

Old lampshades from fixtures often have spots of different origins or areas faded from the light bulb. Such an interior item looks old-fashioned, but not very beautiful. You can repair an old thing using the decoupage technique. Let's figure out how to do it right.

To work, you will need the following:

  • An old floor lamp in need of restoration with a plastic or paper lampshade.
  • Round decoupage napkins (you can use a three-layer serving good quality) with the desired pattern.
  • White napkins.
  • Scissors.
  • PVA glue.
  • Liquid wallpaper glue.
  • Red beads.
  • Glue gun.
  • The brushes are wide and small.
  • Primer or matt white paint.
  • Hair dryer.
  • Iron.
  • Sponge for washing dishes.

Important! For decoration, any napkin with a seamless pattern will be appropriate, which will suit the color and theme to the interior of the room in which the lamp will stand.

Lampshade preparation

It often happens that a plastic lampshade has defects, for example, a gap or a hole. Then it must be repaired, otherwise the napkins will not be able to lie smoothly, and some texture will be present:

  1. The hole can be repaired by placing pieces of plastic on the defect. On the wrong side, glue a piece of recording paper (sold in square briquettes) onto PVA glue.
  2. On the front side, attach several layers of a white napkin to PVA and leave to dry.
  3. After the structure has dried, ground the lampshade to better adhere the napkins to the surface. This can be done with a primer or a white matte paint.

Decoupage

After the primer has dried, you can start the decoupage process directly:

  • First you need to prepare napkins. To do this, remove the two white layers, separating the thin color layer, and then gently iron it from the inside with an iron to perfectly align it.
  • Now that the wipes are ready for use, lubricate the surface of the lampshade with wallpaper glue in parts: smear one part with glue, attach part of the napkin, trying to press it evenly on all sides.

Important! It is almost impossible to move the pasted napkin afterwards without ruining the work, so do everything as carefully as possible.

  • Gently moving in a circle, gradually lubricating the entire surface with glue and pressing napkins, paste over the entire lampshade.

Important! In some places, the paper may fall a little or excess glue will collect under it, but when dried and the final decor, all this can be fixed.

  • Cut the rounded edges of the napkins into several parts, and then bend inward, smearing with wallpaper glue.
  • After that, the inside of the lampshade will have an ugly appearance, so fragments of napkins should also be added there.
  • At the end of the work, when the entire lampshade will be glued with napkins without gaps, cover it again with glue and dry thoroughly.
  • After the lampshade is completely dried (preferably after a day) it remains only to cover it with acrylic varnish, but this step is not necessary.

Important! For dry rooms, you can cover the pattern with hairspray, but it is worth remembering that it can not be washed with water, although, as a rule, this is not required - just brush off the dust with a special velvet for cleaning.

Restoration of fabric floor lamp

If you have an old fabric lamp at home that has lost its attractive appearance or simply does not fit into the general interior of the room, then do-it-yourself restoration of the floor lamp will help to rectify the situation and give the old thing a new life with braid, beads or fabric.

To work, you will need the following:

  • The cloth.
  • Cotton braid.
  • Fringe.
  • Gum.
  • Artificial flowers.
  • Ruler.
  • Scissors.
  • Needles and threads.
  • Sewing machine.

The sequence of work is as follows:

  • First you need to update all the main parts of the lamp. Remove the lampshade from the floor lamp and remove its old screed. After that, wash and dry the frame, and then measure it and make a pattern to make a new covering.

Important! If the lampshade has a cylindrical shape, then you should measure the height of the stand and the circumference of the ring of the frame, then make a pattern in the form of a rectangle. The height of this rectangle will correspond to the height of the rack, and the length to the circumference of the ring.

  • Find the right fabric for your new lampshade. To make the right choice, it is advisable to turn on the lamp and look at it through the fabric. It is also necessary to evaluate whether the lampshade from this fabric successfully fits into the interior of the room.

Important! Structures made of materials that are too thin through which the lamp and the frame are visible should preferably be lined.

  • After the material is selected, cut out the trim elements from it according to the pattern you have prepared. To the lower and upper sides of the parts, add the allowances that are necessary in order to bend the fabric and make a drawstring for the elastic or cord.
  • Sew all edges of the parts with a stitch seam and sew along the sides. Then bend the upper and lower allowances inward and make a drawstring in which leave a small hole - an elastic band or drawstring will pass through it.
  • After that, wrap the racks, as well as the upper and lower rings, with a cotton cloth. Pull the material onto the frame and insert the elastic into the drawstring.
  • The resulting finished design can be finished with textile or bead fringe, sewing it to the product along the lower ring. Also, the surface can be trimmed with artificial flowers.

Important! To pick up flowers, fringe, other decoration is necessary in accordance with the interior of the room.
