Despite the development of modern technologies and construction techniques, whitewashing the ceiling is very popular when performing both overhaul and cosmetic repairs. For this purpose, you can use both the lime familiar to our parents and water-based paint. Since this type of decoration does not require special knowledge and skills, you can perform whitewashing of surfaces in your own apartment yourself.

Surface preparation

Before proceeding with the processing of the ceiling, it is necessary to clean it from the old coating. This process is quite complex and time-consuming, so first remove all the interior items from the room.

Important! If you do not have the opportunity to remove certain types of furniture from the room, then cover their surface with a plastic film, and carefully fix the film itself with tape.

You should also take care of personal safety, for which experts recommend using a respirator and safety glasses.

Useful Tips:

• When removing old whitewash from the surface of the ceiling, make sure that there are no missing areas.
• If rust spots and smudges are found, use copper sulfate solution to clean.
• Smoked areas of the ceiling above the oven are best treated with a 3% hydrochloric acid solution.
• All mechanical damage you find in the form of cracks and bumps should be puttied.

Important! In the absence of special putty compositions, it is possible to prepare a solution of gypsum, chalk and wood glue, the ratio of which should be 1: 2: 2. The most practical way to grout putty is to process it with a wooden beam.

Preparation of tools and materials

For further work you will need the following set of tools:

• warm water;
• vinegar or citric acid;
• scraper;
• solution of copper sulfate;
• wooden block.

Important! Cretaceous whitewashing is washed off the ceiling surface much more easily than its calcareous counterpart.

Upon completion of all work on cosmetic surface treatment, it is necessary to treat the ceilings with a primer, which allows not only to smooth the surface, but also to eliminate the slightest defects. Thus, you will ensure that you receive the highest quality result after the completion of whitewashing.

Primer

Carrying out repairs in your home, you can make a choice in favor of using a purchased primer from a hardware store or a self-prepared composition. If you decide to prepare the building composition yourself, then use one of the following recipes:

Universal composition:

1. In a container filled with 5 liters of water, add 2.5 kg of lime, which should be stirred until completely dissolved.
2. Dilute 70 g of table salt in hot water and add lime to the solution.
3. Stir the resulting composition, leave for some time.
4. Add water to a container until a 10 liter volume of mixture is obtained.
5. In one and a half liters of wood glue, add about 150 grams of chalk.
6. Strain the lime compound with a fine gauze or sieve.
7. Add glue with chalk to the resulting thick mass.

Important! This composition is suitable for sealing large cracks, and for applying a small layer on the surface of the ceiling.

Based on drying oils:

1. Take 3 kg of hydrated lime, laundry soap and drying oil.
2. Dilute 150-200 grams of soap in a container filled with three liters of hot water.
3. Add the drying oil to the resulting soap solution.
4. Place slaked lime in a separate container and dilute with 4 liters of water.
5. Combine both of the resulting composition and mix thoroughly.
6. If the total volume of the resulting substance is less than 10 liters, then add the missing volume with water.

Important! The primer mixture made according to this recipe has a high level of reliability and can be made at home.

Whitewashing procedure

When the full range of preparatory work is completed, you can safely proceed directly to the procedure of whitewashing the ceiling, which can be performed using lime or chalk.

Chalk composition

To prepare such a building composition, you will need the following components:

• 2-3 kg of chalk;
• 100 g of wood glue;
• laundry soap;
• 3-4 liters of water;
• about 15-17 g of blue.

The composition of the whitewash for the ceiling is prepared according to the following algorithm:

1. In a container filled with hot water, dissolve the sifted chalk and wood glue.
2. In order for the surface to be treated to have the most attractive appearance, add a small amount of blue to the composition.
3. Thoroughly mix the resulting substance and proceed to surface treatment.

Important! In order for the ceiling surface to have the most attractive shade, the main thing is not to go too far with the amount of coloring matter, which is blue. If you plan to process a bright room, then you can completely refuse to add this component.

Composition of slaked lime

For surface treatment with lime, you will need the following materials:

• 2 kg of slaked lime;
• 40 g of blue;
• 200 g of aluminum alum;
• 100 g of salt.

Prepare the highest quality composition for whitewashing, following the following recommendations:

1. Dissolve slaked lime in a little warm water.
2. Add a small amount of blue, table salt and aluminum alum to the resulting solution.
3. Thoroughly mix the mixture and bring its volume to 10 liters.

The finished building composition must be evenly applied to the ceiling surface using a roller. Before performing this procedure, it is advisable to hide the surfaces of already decorated walls to avoid further contamination.

Important! If the apartment is on the sunny side, then experts recommend closing the windows. In this way, you will whitewash the natural drying process. Also avoid drafts in the room, because they can lead to the formation of bumps.

Water-based paint

You can also process the surface of the ceiling with water-based paint. This technology is somewhat different from whitewashing, but it is not particularly difficult.

The whole range of works can be divided into the following stages:

1. Surface cleaning.
2. Padding.
3. Putty.
4. Dyeing

Important! To achieve the highest quality effect, it is recommended to use exclusively store-bought, ready-made mixtures. The applied paint usually consists of two parts - base and color.

1. The coloring matter can be applied up to 3 times, however, the best option is to whitewash the ceiling in 2 layers.
2. During the staining session, the composition lays in one direction.
3. Hard-to-reach areas are most conveniently treated with a brush, but the central area is usually painted with a roller.
