Water purification from a well
It is impossible to imagine a summer house or just grandmother's old house, near which there would be no well with water. The water in the well, in theory, should be clean, without any impurities, but in reality this is far from the case. Unfortunately, any water has its drawbacks. But it can be cleaned, the main thing is to know the answer to the question of how the water is cleaned from the well, and everything will be fine.
to contents ↑Reasons why the water becomes cloudy
In order to understand the factors that affect water quality, first of all, you should carefully examine the well itself. Likely reasons:
- Depressurization of the well rings at the junction, therefore, soil elements, as well as melt water, received open access inside the well shaft.
- If the site has already been acquired with an existing well, the reason may be that it was improperly built or operated. For example, if a well was built on floating soils - sand dissolved in water under pressure can penetrate into the well’s shaft, thereby making the water cloudy.
In addition, turbidity in the water appears as a result of such factors:
- on the walls of the well, the process of accumulation of lime layers and other particles occurs;
- technical factors, namely: the appearance of cracks inside concrete rings or their displacement;
- if an animal or bird gets inside the well’s shaft, the water can not only become contaminated, but also become completely unusable;
- sparse use of the contents of the well leads to stagnation, turbidity, and also water decay;
- melt water can penetrate into the well due to the destruction of the clay castle or its complete absence;
- Also, the cause of water siltation is the incorrect location of the pump, which during operation raises all the dirt from the bottom, thereby worsening the performance of the water.
Once you find out the reason, it will become clear which water treatment from the well is suitable in your case.
to contents ↑Step-by-step water treatment from a well
If the water has not only become turbid, but also acquired an uncharacteristic taste and smell, you should take it to the laboratory for inspection. Iron compounds, small elements of sand, soil, hydrogen sulfide, clay, isotopes of heavy metals, as well as various colonies of bacteria - all this was an incomplete list of what can be found by experts.
Basic cleaning steps:
- In order to purify the water, you must tidy the entire surface of the walls and the bottom of the well itself. That is why in the first stage you must pump out all the water.
- Next, inspect all surfaces, at the same time determine the complexity of the contamination.
- Perform mechanical cleaning of the walls of sludge, dirt and plaque using scrapers or sponges.
- Rinse and remove the bottom layer of crushed stone to replace it with fresh.
- At the final stage, install the necessary filter to purify water from the well.
How and from what to clean water?
- Well owners often have to clean it from iron. This cleaning is carried out in several ways using reagent and reagent-free filters.
Important! If the concentration of iron in water is more than 1 mg / l, you will feel a characteristic smack, and during washing characteristic marks will remain on the laundry. Also on the surface of the walls of the well you can see spots of brown shade.
- To clean clay water from a well, you can use a mechanical filter. Thus, the mesh plastic filter accumulates small dissolved clay elements at the bottom of the filter.
- Use replaceable cartridge filters, as well as the most productive - pressure devices. Thanks to them, it is possible to purify water from a well from various organic additives.

How to disinfect water?
If laboratory tests claim that it is not allowed to use water without additional disinfection, then you must carry out a number of special measures:
- First you will need to carry out a mechanical cleaning followed by disinfection of the surfaces.
- Then sanitize the water several times in a row.
Chlorine Disinfection
Well disinfection:
- After thorough mechanical cleaning of the well, apply a special disinfecting solution to the surface of the walls and roof.
- Prepare this solution in a clean container, which is closed by a lid - pour 20 mg of lime 1 liter of water. The cover must be in order to prevent the evaporation of chlorine. When the prepared composition has settled, drain the solution into another container, removing the precipitate.
- Apply a solution of bleach with a spray or brush.
Important! Apply the solution to the surface up to 3 times, taking breaks of several hours.
- Disinfect the water that is collected in the treated well. To do this, prepare a special solution - dissolve 100-150 g of bleach in 1 m3.
- You must pour this solution into the well, and then thoroughly mix it with a long pole.
- You can evenly distribute the solution in the liquid with a bucket. After pouring the solution into water, fill it with a bucket and pour it back abruptly. Do this several times over 10 minutes.
Important! When carrying out an event for treating a well, one should never use water - neither boiled nor raw. This is extremely dangerous for your health.
- After all the procedures, close the well on top for 6 hours so that the water settles, while the chlorine does not evaporate.
- Over time, the characteristic aroma of chlorine should disappear, if this happened, make fresh bleach, which will be ¼ of the original volume and pour into water for another 4 hours.
Important! Having finished the process of disinfecting water, it is chosen until the smell of the reagent is eliminated. Only then can it be used to cook food or just drink, provided that it is thoroughly boiled for another 1 week.
Safety measures during the work with bleach:
- In order not to inhale the fumes of toxic chlorine, use a respirator or gas mask.
- Rubber boots, uniforms and gloves protect the skin from getting chlorine solution on the skin, thereby preventing chemical burns.
- You can protect your eyes with welding glasses.
Filters for water purification from a well
There are quite a lot of varieties of filters. Differing among themselves with modifications, properties and appearance, all of them are designed to make the water from the well suitable for drinking.
The main thing is to choose one among a large number that will help solve the problem of a particular well.
Important! The narrow-profile filter is slightly cheaper in cost than an integrated one. Therefore, if you have the results of analyzes of water from a well, you can choose a specific filter, thereby saving a little.
Types and purpose
It is customary to distinguish water filters according to their method of purifying water from a well. There are several types:
- Mechanical cleaning. Thanks to the operation of such filters, soil, particles of sand, rust and clay are eliminated.
- Antibacterial.The action of these filters is aimed at neutralizing organics.
- Absorbing odors and various impurities. Using them from the water can eliminate extraneous odors and flavors.
- Filters for cleaning water from a well that can make water softer thanks to ion exchange technology. Such devices purify water from all salts that, when boiled, settle on the walls of dishes, household appliances
- Eliminating specifically iron from a liquid using oxidative reactions.
- The most expensive and effective filters are complex. These filters are able to remove all available water imperfections from the well, from transparency and color to compliance with all sanitary standards.
The choice
It is not easy to choose the suitable device from the proposed ones, even if you have the results of water analysis on your hands and you know what type of filter you need. The choice of filter is influenced not only by the cost, reputation of the manufacturer, but also by other factors.
For example:
- Is it worth it to install a fairly expensive permanent filter in the well at the site, if you appear there 1-2 times a month? If you have to drink water from a well, but there is no other source on your site, you can take care of filtering it in another way - a filter-jug. The displacement of this device will not only allow you to prepare drinking water for your family, it will also allow you to cook food on it.
Important! Such a filter is incredibly convenient, however, if nitrates or harmful bacteria are present in the water, it will not guarantee you a high-quality result.
- If the water is very polluted, it is better to choose a different cleaning method. You can use the flow filter, which will cope with the purification of water from various types of bacteria, unpleasant odors and residues of organic fertilizers.

Given the modern range of water purifiers, we can endlessly talk about the advantages and disadvantages of each. And if it’s much easier to choose the suitable option for an apartment, because it will work in a round-the-clock stationary mode, but when choosing a method of purifying water from a well, take into account all the practical nuances. Otherwise, you will get clean water, but the costs will be inappropriate.
