to contents ↑The advantages of homemade furniture
In addition to the fact that making a soft kitchen corner with your own hands is an exciting and creative process, it makes it possible to use the space as efficiently as possible, even if you have a very tiny apartment. A kitchen corner is a place where all family members gather for dinner, receive the closest guests, and sometimes they just relax with a cup of tea or a book.
The advantages of such furniture are many:
- you create comfortable conditions for yourself;
- the kitchen looks especially cozy;
- You can zone the room as you like.
What should he be?
Having decided to make a kitchen corner with your own hands, you can also make drawings and schemes yourself. Of course, they can be found on the Internet, but you still have to customize them to specific conditions.
When drawing up the drawing, you need to consider:
- the size of the room;
- kitchen layout;
- the size of the dining area;
- the number of people who will be sitting at the table at the same time.
The kitchen corner is a miniature sofa, which can be used for gatherings at dinner, and as a box for any small things. There are models that allow you to quickly arrange a berth for an unexpected guest.
to contents ↑Important! For a small kitchen, a sofa for 2-3 seats with folding seats is more convenient, for a large one you can make modular furniture, which is rearranged as necessary.
Types of kitchen furniture
If you are going to make a kitchen corner with your own hands from wood or other materials, first decide on the type. A kitchenette may be:
- standard;
- modular;
- bay window;
- sliding.
Standard
A standard corner is this same small sofa, which is most often found in kitchens in small apartments. It looks like a single, but in fact, consists of three parts:
- two side seats;
- one corner.
Important! This is perhaps the most ergonomic option, making it possible not only to correctly organize the space, but also to use the corners, which are often empty with a different layout. There may be a standard sofa without an angular component - instead of it, a suitable ottoman, often also made by hand, is put on.
Modular furniture
Actually, in this case there can be no sofa. It will be successfully replaced by several bollards or even chairs with backs, which can be moved and extended as you wish. In this case, it is very important that the elements made up together look like a single whole. But the modular corners are different - for most models, individual elements are connected into a continuous structure with the help of simple manipulations.
Important! As a rule, upholstered furniture is modular. The undoubted advantage of such structures is the ability to change the interior.
Bay window sofa
This is the corner that is most suitable for large kitchens. This can be installed, for example, in a niche, if one exists, or in the center of the room, if the dimensions allow.
But the shape of the bay window is different:
- semicircular;
- triangular;
- square.
Important! You can choose an interesting model for a small room. For example, nothing prevents you from installing a triangular model in the corner of a square kitchen.
Sliding corners
In furniture stores you will meet such, but they are quite expensive. During the day it is a small sofa on which they sit, at night it turns into a berth - quite spacious and comfortable. You can make such a model yourself, but it requires some skills and a lot of patience. In addition, a mechanism is needed. Of course, you can buy it at a furniture component store, but they are not available in all cities. So for starters it is better to opt for a standard or modular version.
to contents ↑Choose material
For the manufacture of kitchen corners with your own hands are used:
- wood;
- metal;
- plastic.
What to give preference to? So:
- For a beginner furniture maker, it is better to immediately refuse the last two options. You are unlikely to find the necessary plastic elements in an ordinary hardware store. It is much easier to get metal parts, however, special equipment will be required. Although metal furniture for the kitchen looks very impressive and is especially suitable for lovers of modern styles, like Hi-tech.
- The ideal option is a tree. This material is very easy to get, details you can order, and buy, and do it yourself. In addition, on sale you will find timber and boards of all grades and types, so that the most unexpected design decisions are possible. And it’s easy to process wooden parts - if the financial possibilities do not allow you to make a frame of boxwood or a lining of rosewood, you can buy the most ordinary timber and process it with stain for any breed.
Where to get the material?
So, you decide to make a wooden kitchen corner with your own hands. A person who has never been engaged in the manufacture of furniture, sometimes does not want to mess with this, because he believes that he will have to plan, cut and clean everything himself. This is not entirely true. Something, of course, will have to be done by myself, but not all. Finished materials that need only final processing and assembly, you can buy:
- in construction stores;
- in workshops for cutting wood-based materials.
So that you can build or find drawings, and order parts already on them. If you want to do everything yourself, you will need some materials that are most often not in the arsenal of a home master:
- Circular Saw;
- Sander;
- milling machine.
You can buy them, but they are quite expensive. However, if you are not going to limit yourself to making only one kitchen corner and want to continue making furniture - it’s better to take care of the tools right away, even if they are expensive.

What are you going to cover your corner? For laying, most likely, sheet foam rubber is required. It should be pretty fat. To cover, you can take:
- skin
- leatherette;
- wallpaper fabric;
- microfiber.
to contents ↑Important! It should be borne in mind that some dirt constantly gets on the kitchen furniture - fats, sauces, coffee, etc. So it is better if the furniture can be washed. In this sense, nothing better than leather or leatherette has not yet been invented.
What else will you need?
Having wondered how to assemble a kitchen corner, take care of how and with what you will fasten the parts. Of course, you will need accessories:
- furniture corners;
- dowels;
- confirmations;
- self-tapping screws.
Among other things, you will need some more free space for the workshop, as well as the most common tools:
- drill;
- hammer;
- screwdrivers;
- stapler.
to contents ↑Important! At low speeds, the drill can be used as a screwdriver, if there is a special nozzle.
Choose a configuration
Before you even make a kitchen corner, pay attention to the place where it will stand. Corners are:
- left-handed;
- right-handed.
If you still have not decided what exactly you need, make a right corner with a pedestal. Also determine the dimensions of your product - it is best to outline a place on the floor and measure it carefully, and then divide the length into the desired number of elements. Note that the corner should be as close to the wall as possible. The individual elements must be adjacent to each other.
Important! Try to choose a design that will not interfere with the baseboard.
Seat height
In general, a place for a corner is better to mark immediately not only in area, but also in height. It should be such that everyone is comfortable sitting with everyone. To do this, you can choose, for example, the most comfortable chair and calculate the distance from the floor to the seat on it, as well as the dimensions of the back.
There are also average sizes by which standard angles are usually made:
- distance from the floor to the seat - 45 cm;
- height with back - 90 cm;
- seat depth - 50 cm or slightly less;
- total length - 120-200 cm.
Kitchen corner assembly
Before combining them into a single whole, all details must be treated with sandpaper so that there is no splinter. If you want to change the color of wood, treat the necessary fragments with a stain, fortunately, in the shops you will find compositions of all colors and shades that you can think of.
You need to start making a sofa with a box - this is the main fragment. It is made of timber:
- Assemble the lower perimeter - it is a rectangle along the length and width of the sofa.
- Divide the long sides in half or even into 3 equal parts - the marks should be strictly opposite each other.
- Place stiffeners between the marks.
- Screw the racks at the corners of the front part, the height of which is equal to the distance from the floor to the seat.
- At the corners of the back there are racks from floor to top of the back.
- Where there are stiffeners, you can put additional racks of the appropriate size.
- Drill the holes for the legs - 4 or 6, depending on the length of the sofa. In the latter case, the second pair should be exactly in the middle.
- Glue the legs - it is important that they are absolutely identical in height.
- Screw 2 sidewalls - they, like stiffeners, are load-bearing elements.
- Along the back, attach a strip of 10-15 cm wide to the seat along the entire length.
- Screw the bottom - a rectangle of laminated chipboard.
- Screw the front part and 2 sidewalls.
- Screw the backrest trim - it is made of polished chipboard.
- The reclining seat is best screwed onto the piano hinge, but if not, you can use the door.
to contents ↑Important! The seat can be made with a slight tilt towards the back.
Do the laying
It is impossible to make a soft kitchen corner with your own hands only from boards. Sitting on a hard board is uncomfortable. Need soft pads. Popular material is ST1825 and ST1836 sheet foam rubber. They have standard softness. It is best to use both types, this will avoid deformation:
- Cut the pads to fit the back and seat.
- Glue them with universal glue.
to contents ↑Important! It is best to cut foam rubber not with a knife, but with a nichrome thread, having preheated it.
Upholstery
Now you know how to make a kitchen corner yourself - more precisely, you have a few more steps left. Upholstery is an important point, because the appearance of furniture depends on it for the most part. The procedure is simple. First you need to carve out a panel for all the details:
- 2 external parts of sidewalls;
- 2 internal parts;
- back + strip to which the seat is attached;
- actually the seat;
- long strip for front and sides.
You can upholstery a sofa in any order. By the way, no one bothers even upholstering the sidewalls, and only then attach them to the frame. What to fix? There are several options. You can, for example, stick with universal glue. But nothing prevents us from using the good old method with wallpaper nails - both more environmentally friendly and more reliable.

If you wish, you can add a sofa with a curbstone, which is placed in a corner, or even two curbstones - on the one hand and on the other. But it will already be modular furniture - more precisely, something like a borderline option. In a word, getting down to business, you will immediately get a lot of new opportunities that are not as difficult to realize as it might seem to a person who has never held a jigsaw and a hammer in his hands.
