to contents ↑The main varieties of curtain rods
In order to understand how to make a curtain rod with your own hands, you need to familiarize yourself with the main types of this design.
Cornices are classified according to the following characteristics:
- Type.
- The material of manufacture.
- The installation location of the structure.
- The number of rows.
Installation location
Cornices can be located both on the wall and on the ceiling. Previously, they used the wall mount of the cornice, but now people prefer to mount the structure on the ceiling. This choice is due to the fact that the wall cornices, under the weight of a heavy curtain, can break off, and the ceiling eaves hold fast to the ceiling with special fasteners.
Row
You can divide the cornices by the number of rows that are necessary for curtains. Today, layered designs are popular. They allow you to hang, for example, a curtain and tulle on one solid cornice.
Construction device:
- String cornice. The most common option. In this design, the curtains move along the tension strings, which are hidden by a decorative bar.
- Tubular cornice. It has been used for a very long time and has been familiar to us since childhood. The only downside is that over time, the surface of the cornice can lose smoothness, as a result of this, the rings that hold the curtain begin to move poorly.
- Baguette cornice. The most modern material from all the above cornices. The design consists of a profile with grooves, which are usually hung on the ceiling, sometimes on the wall.
Materials
Cornices can be made of such material:
- Metal.
- Plastic.
- Wood.
- Drywall.
As you can see, the variety of curtain rods is very large and there is, so to speak, plenty to choose from. Next, we will talk in detail about each curtain rod, its advantages and disadvantages, and how to make curtains for curtains with your own hands.
to contents ↑Metal curtain rod
This is a fairly simple implementation of such a complex design. Metal cornices are used, as a rule, for heavy curtains and multi-row compositions. Everything is not as complicated as it seems at first glance. A metal cornice is very expensive, so take your time with it. You can do this design yourself at home:
- To do this, you need to buy a metal profile, hooks and fix the cornice to the ceiling.
Important! Do not forget that the number of stripes in the profile should match the number of expected curtains.
- A tubular cornice is also made of metal. This requires an aluminum or stainless pipe and brackets for mounting. You can take a metal rod and put the plugs around the edges using wooden door handles.
Polyurethane cornice
Plastic cornices are well suited for light curtains, as this material is not able to withstand heavy loads. The most common option is a tubular cornice. Making a curtain rail with your own hands at the cottage is quite simple. And to find materials for its manufacture - especially, for example, to buy in a plumbing store.
to contents ↑Important! Polyurethane cornice is a material with positive characteristics, unlike all other polymers:
- Polyurethane, like any plastic, is completely not afraid of water, so it can be safely used, for example, in a bathroom or a bathroom.
- The material is light enough, durable and resistant to high temperatures.
- Such characteristics allow you to hang a curtain rail made of polyurethane in almost all conditions and stick to almost all substrates, including drywall construction.
- To install such a cornice, only a polyurethane profile and curtain hooks are needed. Excellent flexibility of the material allows you to give it any shape you like.
Cornice for curtains made of wood
Decorative elements with an aging effect are gaining popularity. Even new objects are remade to old using the technique of scuffing the surface and decoupage. The curtain rod for curtains, in this case, is no exception - on the contrary. Wood is used to create different planks for one type of structure.
It is very easy to make a cornice from wood, adding various elements of decor at your discretion:
- From the sheet of chipboard we cut the bar of the required length and width. After that, we paint or paste with a self-adhesive film of the desired color.
- If it so happened that it is impossible to cut a bar of the required length from a chipboard sheet, it can be attached additionally using special glue or furniture brackets.
- We fix the bar to the ceiling using metal corners. For such a construction, as a rule, single-row or multi-row strings are used.
to contents ↑Important! You can use another option for the manufacture of such a cornice. To do this, you need to take a suitable wooden stick, walk on it with sandpaper, sand it and insert it into the brackets, which can also be done with your own hands.
Drywall curtain rod
Such cornices are very popular for creating a modern interior. But for the manufacture you need the necessary materials and tools, a little construction experience.
The main features of the cornice made of this material are listed below:
- This design has the form of a box in which you can connect additional lighting using spotlights.
- Most often, a niche is made for a suspended or suspended ceiling.
- The main purpose of the drywall cornice is to hide the cornice and the top of the curtains from prying eyes. That is why it is made across the width of the window opening or over the entire area of the wall.
Important! The installation of such a niche for the cornice must be carried out precisely at the stage of manufacturing the ceiling, since it is much more convenient than installing after all the work done.
As you can see, there are a lot of options for manufacturing curtain rods. It’s just worth showing your imagination, making a little effort, and a stylish piece of furniture will emphasize the impeccable taste of the owner.

For the kitchen or utility rooms, you can independently make a cornice using a long-forgotten plastic pipe. Such a cornice is well suited for curtains on rings or loops, also created with your own hands. For its manufacture, several pipes are required (depending on the required length), special holders and materials for attaching this design.
Important! Curtains for a plastic eaves can be sewn as an hourglass. To do this, we fix the cornices on the upper and lower wings, stretch the canvas and pull it in the center.
Below we will step by step look at how to make a curtain rod for curtains and a plastic pipe:

- Next, you need to measure the width of the window opening.
- To the measurements you need to add about 20 cm, we get the length of our future cornice.
- Now we are gradually starting to assemble the structure. To begin with, we put the corners on the edges of the plastic pipe.
- We insert small segments, approximately 15 cm, into the corner in order to leave a gap between the wall and the cornice.
- After - we fasten the metal clips to the ends of the short tubes.
- We paint the cornice, for example, in gold, silver or another color.
- After the paint has completely dried, we fix the finished cornice to the wall.
That's all, the work is over! We got a full-fledged curtain rod with our own hands. It is done quickly, and most importantly - your forgotten plastic pipes will be used in your interior. Agree, this is a very profitable solution!

Curtains are a type of curtain for which a translucent or dense lightweight fabric is used. Sometimes curtains are called such structures on which curtains are attached.
Important! Both options are correct. The word designation, translated from Dutch, means the curtain and the structure on which it is attached.
For sewing curtains use such fabrics:
- Tulle.
- Veil.
- Organza.
- Muslin.
- Chiffon.
Today you can easily buy ready-made curtains of different types and models. Their selection is large enough. We will tell you how to sew curtains and design them according to your sophisticated taste and preferences. Sometimes it is very difficult to find a suitable curtain for a window of a non-standard size, and stitching it is much more economical and more pleasant.
General principles for sewing curtains
In order to sew curtains, it is not necessary to have a lot of experience in cutting and sewing. The main thing is to correctly measure, prepare the fabric and the necessary tools. Believe me, everything will go on like clockwork, you just have to start!
How to take measurements?
- First you need to measure the length of the cornice.
- After - measure the distance between the cornice and the floor.
Important! If you need sufficiently long curtains, then add another 10-20 cm to the length.
- If you need to sew curtains with fold allowances, then add ⅓ of the total length to the length of the cornice.
- If you want a curtain with lush drapery, then you need a length of fabric such as three lengths of cornice in general.
How to choose the right material for curtains?
In order to choose fabric for sewing curtains, it is necessary to consider all directions of the world. For instance:
- In a room located on the south side, it is better to use more dense and opaque fabric as curtains.
- If the windows face the shady side, then you can stop at a thinner and lighter fabric.
to contents ↑Important! Do not forget that fabrics such as chiffon and veil, when sewing on a sewing machine, can form an accordion. Therefore, the line must be done slowly and with extreme caution. For such work it is better to use more gentle modern machines that have the function of sewing on thin fabric.
Step-by-step instructions on how to sew curtains
Of course, in a shaded room, a curtain made of thick fabric will make the room dark and gloomy. But along with this, such an ordinary curtain will add sophistication to the interior, so the solution to this problem is a curtain for the curtains, created by yourself. It can be sewn multi-layered and finally decorated with a lambrequin. Your room will become beautiful and elegant, and the pleasant rays of the sun will delight you every day.
Stage 1 - buying and cutting fabric
Let's get acquainted with the calculations for constructing patterns for curtains. For an example, we will take a cloth of the standard size of 1.2-2.2 meters:
- In order to calculate the amount of fabric, you must use the formula: divide the width of the curtains by the width of the fabric, we get the number of stripes.
- Next, we multiply the resulting number by the length of the curtains, including allowances for the seams. For example, the width of the curtain is 9 meters, its length is 3 meters. In a roll of fabric, for example, 1.5 meters. We get: 9/1, 5.6 strips of fabric come out.
- Now we multiply the number of stripes by the length of our curtain: 6 multiply by 3 and get 18 meters. Thus, in order to sew a curtain measuring 9 by 3 meters, you need to take 18 meters of fabric 1.5 meters wide.
Important! This method can be used both for one curtain for the entire width of the window, and for several curtains. For curtains of two halves, only one half of the cut fabric needs to be sewn. To make the incision even enough, use chalk or a bar of soap.
Stage 2 - sewing curtains
We will familiarize you with step-by-step instructions for sewing curtains with your own hands:
- First, we sew together the rectangles of the fabric so that in the end we learn a canvas of the required size.
- In order for the seams to be less noticeable, indent from the edge of the fabric and process each seam with an overlock.
- Each edge, except the bottom, is rotated by about 1-1.5 cm.
Important! If you use a thin cloth for curtains, then the hem should be very small. When bending from 1 cm or more, the edges of the curtains will look messy.
- Before you process the edges of the fabric, you need to pin them with a needle with a round eye, notice and iron afterwards. We bend the lower edge by about 5-10 cm.
- In order to process the upper edge, you need to make a hem about 5 cm to the wrong side, and using pins, attach a braid to it.
Important! If the braid has a width of more or less than 5 cm, then the width of the hem should be equal to the width of this braid. If you want to sew curtains for a wide braid, then at purchase it is necessary to consider the size for a hem.
- Now we sew the tape on the curtain.
Important! To prevent the curtain tape from wrinkling, try to sew stitches in one direction.
- At the end of the work, we tighten the cords in braid, collect the curtains in folds, beautifully straighten them and tie knots at the ends of the side cords.

The market offers a wide selection of different lambrequins, so for starters you need to decide how you want to decorate the kitchen, living room or children's room. Lambrequins can be in different designs: arches, waves, cylindrical, drop-shaped, with folds or frills, decorated with braid or ribbon. In a word, you can make lambrequins with your own hands in different designs, as soon as your imagination allows. Examples of finished work on creating lambrequins can be found in the photo. There are so many that believe me, there is plenty to choose from.
We offer you to familiarize yourself with the main recommendations for sewing lambrequins:
- Lambrequin must be fixed separately from curtains and curtains, because regardless of the window curtains, it will always be in the same place.
- Easy and simple to sew a horizontal pelmet. To do this, you need to cut a strip along the width of the window, sew a braid to it, tape the bottom edge and completely assemble the braid.
- It is much more difficult to create such an element of lambrequins as swag, since to sew it you need to create a pattern.
Important! In order to properly build a pattern, it is necessary to cut the swag at an angle of 45 ° to the direction of the shared thread of the canvas. The consumption of fabric in this case will not be completely economical, but the swag will lie exactly with soft folds, without untidy creases.
- The width of the pattern elements directly depends on the length of the cornice. For example, if you want to make a lambrequin of three swags, then sew them with a slight overlap, that is, an overlap.
