How to install skirting boards on linoleum?
The final process of laying any flooring, of course, is the installation of skirting boards around the perimeter of the room. This element is considered mandatory, since only it is able to so accurately and beautifully hide the gaps between the walls and the floor, the communication wiring and other details that should not be visible from the outside. The baseboard makes the lower part of the room more attractive, neat, and all this thanks to high-quality modern materials. A wide range of colors turns the edging into a successful decorative addition to the room. So, let's find out how to install skirting boards on linoleum so that in the end it retains its aesthetic appearance for a long time and lasts a long time.
to contents ↑Which skirting option is more suitable for linoleum?
Of course, you need to start with the choice and purchase of the skirting board, and then proceed with the installation. When choosing this decor element, you need to consider the type of flooring directly on which it will be laid. If we are talking about linoleum as in our case, then the best option can be called models of laminate or plastic skirting:
- PVC panels are the most popular because they are sold not only in a flat form, but can also be voluminous with internal cavities where it is convenient to place wires. They are sold complete with fittings, so installing them will not be difficult.
- In principle, linoleum can be edged with a laminated tree, but here it will take longer to tinker with the installation.

It is recommended to buy plastic strips from one batch, otherwise - there may be problems with a difference in the color of the products.
Features of mounting bulk plastic skirting boards
Now we will consider in detail how to attach the baseboard to the linoleum, when you need to hide the additional wiring. Naturally, in this case, a volumetric version of the slats is used.
The entire installation process is divided into several stages.
Measurement of room parameters
First you need to measure the room around the perimeter in order to understand how many skirting boards you need to purchase. The standard length of the plastic baseboard is 2.5 m, but it is recommended to purchase a couple of meters more material. It is also necessary to calculate how many connecting elements are required, in particular internal corners, end caps, connectors.
Preparation of materials and tools necessary for laying
In addition to the baseboard, for work you will need:
- construction vacuum cleaner;
- brush or rag;
- hammer;
- building tape;
- pencil;
- screwdriver;
- hacksaw for metal;
- awl;
- screwdriver;
- hammer drill and screws.
Dust cleaning and marking
From below, linoleum and walls need to be cleaned of construction debris and dust with a brush, rag or construction vacuum cleaner. Now you can start the markup. It is recommended to carry out its application from the angle of:
- Take the long bar and put the corner on its end.
- Then attach the baseboard to the wall so that the corners of the plank and the room match.
- The first mark is placed at a distance of five centimeters from the corner - the first hole will be made here.
- Then, using a tape measure, measure the distance of 40 cm, mark the point for the second hole with a pencil.
- In a similar way, places are marked for the remaining holes.
- Now you can move the baseboard and start drilling.
Preparing holes in the walls
It is recommended to drill with a hammer drill, and if the wall is made of drywall, it is better to use a drill. When all the holes have been drilled, you can once again walk along the surface with a vacuum cleaner and a brush.
Plastic dowels are installed in the holes, which are best driven with a hammer.
Installation of strips on the walls and their connection
The design of these strips provides a channel for cable management, which is located on the front of the split strip. So:
- Before starting installation, you need to remove the top of the bar.
- The back is applied to the wall, a hole is pierced in it. You can do this with an awl.
- The holes should coincide with the dowels, because through the holes screws will be inserted into them, which then will need to be screwed in with a screwdriver or screwdriver.
- In the end, when there are only a couple of holes left without screws, you will need to put on the connector on the end of the strip and screw in the last screws.
- Then the next piece of the bar is attached to it.
- In the corners you have to cut the baseboard with a hacksaw.
- The end of the strip is inserted into the connection bracket and mounted in the same way as everyone else.
- Wires are laid a little below the level of dowels in special grooves.
- Then the front panels are connected to the backs of the trims.
Installing flat plastic skirting boards
This section will describe how to install skirting boards on linoleum in the case of applying the simplest finishing option. It is still simpler here, since there is no need to screw the panels to the walls - just glue them with “liquid nails”.
For work you will need:
- building level;
- roulette;
- pencil;
- hacksaw and “liquid nails”.
The installation itself is as follows:
- As in the method described above, you need to prepare the strips of the required length so that they are enough for the whole room, pick up the connecting corners. Next, you need to try to attach to the walls of the plinth to make sure that they are well matched to each other.
- Now you can lay the planks on the walls. On the inner cleaned surface of the first strip, you need to apply glue or dot to the line, and then press it against the wall as tightly as possible. The same should be done with the rest of the panels, while connecting them together with corners and connectors.
Important! Do not squeeze out too much glue from the tube, otherwise - you can smear the baseboard.
- The main thing is to make sure that the installed planks are attached only to the wall, and maybe, they touch the linoleum quite a bit. Otherwise, when shrinkage occurs, cracks form between the walls and planks.
DIY veneer and wooden planks installation
Despite the fact that it is plastic today that is the most popular material for the manufacture of skirting boards, many still prefer products of natural origin. Yes, it’s more difficult to work with wood, as it’s harder to fit under uneven floors and walls of a room. In addition, before attaching the baseboard to the linoleum, it must necessarily be painted or varnished. And these manipulations require additional time and physical costs.
Wooden planks can be laid in the same way as the installation of plastic bulk material. That is, similar actions are performed:
- marking;
- trimming pieces;
- trial installation;
- drilling holes in the wall;
- fixing the baseboard to the wall using self-tapping screws and dowels.
Important! A wooden skirting board can also be attached with nails, but the vertical surface must also be made of wood.When performing such an installation, it is recommended to use a chisel so as not to damage the wooden plank with a hammer.
Often, instead of solid panels, veneer made of several sheets of thin wood glued together is used as the main material. As a rule, veneer has a different texture and color, ideal for coating linoleum. It is attached to the wall and floor in several ways:
- Using “liquid nails”.
- Using self-tapping screws.
- Using special clips.
Important! Whatever method you choose, you will need to saw all parts of the skirting board with a hacksaw at an angle of 45 degrees, to fit all the trims.
The first two installation methods are performed similarly to the installation of a flat and volume skirting, described above. But the third method is slightly different, in particular the use of clips:
- As soon as all segments are fitted, you need to attach each clip to the surface, press it tightly to the linoleum.
- Then, on the wall, make marks for fasteners, drill holes for dowels.
- As soon as the dowels are inserted into the holes, the back of the clip is attached to the wall using self-tapping screws.
- After 40 cm, make such a hole, then all the procedures are repeated.
- After installing all the clips, you can draw the necessary wires through their back and put on the veneer strips on top.
to contents ↑Important! Many beginner builders are interested in how to fix linoleum without removing wooden skirting boards. In fact, it’s impossible to do this qualitatively, it’s better to remove them and lay linoleum reliably, because the main task of skirting boards is to press the flooring to the base. It is better not to take risks and carefully remove them, and then install them in place.
