How to make heat-resistant glass with your own hands?

Fireplaces are once again becoming popular. People install them if there is a technical and financial opportunity. The fireplace has several advantages over other heating systems:

  • Efficiency.
  • Aesthetic appearance. Looking at a blazing fire through a glass door is never boring.
  • Making a fireplace with your own hands with the appropriate building skills is a very real thing.

The theme of today's material is not arranging a fireplace as such, but how to make heat-resistant glass with your own hands to equip a door in it.

The right selection of fireplace glasses

Before you start to make a door with glass for the stove with your own hands, determine the scenario for using the fireplace. If you plan to use it as a heating device, you must choose a two- or even three-layer glass.

Important! If the room is small, then one layer will be enough.

In any case, fireplace glasses must satisfy the following requirements:

  • Resistance to high temperatures.
  • Duration of operation. This indicator is indicated in hours and shows how much the door can withstand in this mode.
  • The strength of the product directly depends on its thickness, indicated in millimeters. As a rule, it is from 3 mm.
  • Soundproof effect. It is important that the material effectively muffles the “buzz” in the furnace. Of course, this is very romantic, but the constant noise is still annoying.

Types of fireplace screens

There are open and closed designs:

  • The closed furnace is equipped with a cast-iron door, which provides the greatest security. The main advantage of closed furnaces is that they provide the greatest efficiency.
  • Open ovens look more aesthetically pleasing. They are equipped with a glass screen that allows you to observe the burning of firewood. Heat-resistant glass copes well with high temperatures, provides fire safety and prevents the entry of combustion products into the room.

Important! For a fireplace screen, you need to choose quartz glass with a small value of linear expansion when heated.

Despite the dark shade, the transparency of such a product is good. Glass product can be made in the following options:

  • The simplest flat screen with one glass.
  • Segmented screen with three glasses.
  • Circular design. Suitable for a free-standing fireplace.

Important! Cases when a fireplace is considered as a self-contained heater are a rarity. But in terms of aesthetics, the fireplace is beyond competition. Therefore, a door made of transparent refractory material is so relevant.

Do-it-yourself fireplace door with glass - manufacturing procedure

You will need to work:

  • Silicone sealant.
  • 4 window panes to fit the screen.
  • Stones for decorating.
  • Metal mesh or grill.
  • A metal box the size of which matches the base of the screen.

The algorithm for making glass for a fireplace with your own hands is as follows:

  1. Apply silicone sealant to all 4 glass edges.
  2. Fix the glass at a right angle so that a parallelepiped-shaped structure is obtained.
  3. Hold the planes firmly against each other and wait until they completely harden.
  4. Cut off the remaining silicone with a knife or razor blade.
  5. The screen is ready, now it remains to complete the base.Apply sealant to the bottom of the glass box and press the glass against the metal box. It is necessary that the sides of the metal box have a width sufficient to accommodate a lattice of metal mesh.
  6. Now equip the firebox. In the middle of the box, install a jar of helium fuel. Lay a metal mesh on the sides (it can be laid in separate pieces). Lay stones on top of the mesh, remembering to leave ventilation slots between them.

The original fireplace of the simplest design is ready!

Care Issues

Even self-cleaning surfaces require periodic cleaning. It is possible to clean the fireplace glass only after it has completely cooled down. It is unsafe to work with hot surfaces, and the material may be damaged. It is desirable to clean the glass with a special composition, since it not only eliminates pollution, but also creates an additional protective layer, which greatly facilitates cleaning in the future.

Important! Abrasive products must not be used - the surface may be damaged.

An attempt to make heat-resistant glass with your own hands at home is a fire and injury hazard. It is possible to make a screen yourself if you have the appropriate skills. If these skills are not, do not tempt fate, turn to the "pros".
