How to hem a tulle at home?
It does not always happen that the finished curtains correspond to the desired length, and sometimes there is a desire or even the need to sew curtains from the fabric you like on your own. How to hem a tulle at home, to process the top and edges, so that the curtains look beautiful and elegant? - There is nothing particularly complicated in such work. To hem the curtains yourself, you will need a sewing machine, a minimal set of materials and tools: scissors, needles, threads. Also, keep an iron nearby at work - with it you will smooth seams and gaps after each line.

Very often, not only the fabric itself, but also all transparent light curtains can be called a tulle. They can be made from tulle or from other fabrics - often it is organza, less often - cotton and viscose.
Before working with light artificial fabric (organza, tulle):
- Pay attention to the canvas and determine how the shared thread passes. The canvas should be cut along it.
- Before starting to trim the edges, they should be steamed with an iron.
- If your fabric is tulle, then to make it easier to navigate, pull one thread from the material at a distance of 0.5-1 cm from the edge, and then cut along the formed line. This focus will not work with any other fabric - you will have to trim without a guideline.
to contents ↑Important! The artificial tulle is quite slippery, so each edge must be aligned one at a time. It is advisable to put a dense cotton material under the fabric so that it glides less.
Sewing methods:
- Often, organza and tulle curtains are hemmed with a double hem.
- To save fabric and not make the curtain too heavy, you can use the so-called Moscow seam.
- And if there is a need for decorative decoration of the edge, then you can use a ready-made oblique trim or sew on braid.
Needles and threads:
- To hem a tulle from organza, you should choose thin strings of size 40 or even less.
- Their color must be in harmony with the color of the fabric. If you have iridescent material, then select the threads a couple of tones lighter - light on a dark background does not stand out so much.
- Needles are inserted into the machine thin. They should be sharp, because tulle is a very delicate material, it is easily torn and pulled together.
Preparatory work:
- Before starting work, you should send the table with a cotton cloth - this will reduce the sliding of the curtain on the surface.
- It is desirable to hem very thin fabric on papyrus paper. And after completing the line, this paper is simply torn off.
- Before starting work on a sewing machine, you should try to sew a little on a small unnecessary piece of tulle. If necessary - you need to adjust the thread tension and the length of the stitch. Seams are made with a straight line with an average step length (3-4 mm).
Side edges
To properly sew the curtains and tulle with your own hands, first you need to process the side edges of the curtain:
- The edge must be trimmed evenly and also smoothed.
- We put the tulle face down, wrap the hem in a couple of centimeters and iron it with an iron.
- Once again, we turn the edge a couple of centimeters and iron. So we get a double hem.
- To make the fabric slip less, you can fix it with pins before ironing.
- Using the machine, we sew the seam at a distance of a couple of millimeters from the edge of the hem.
Similarly, process the second side edge of your curtains.

Some curtains have a beautiful finish at the bottom - festoons, lace, an original pattern. It happens that weights are inserted into the tulle - weights or a special cord. In this case, you can adjust the length of the curtain only if the top edge is machined.
If the canvas has a simple hem, then beautifully hem the tulle in several ways. The simplest is a double hem, the same as on the sides of the canvas.
The width of the hem should be slightly larger than on the sides - this depends on the material of the curtain:
- In a rigid material (organza, kapron) the width of the turn should be at least 3 cm.
- Lightweight tulle and veil can be tucked 2 cm.
- Plastic nets are preferably hemmed to a width of 1 cm.
More difficult to perform are oblique trim and Moscow stitch (American).
to contents ↑Important! It is undesirable to process the bottom of curtains from light types of fabrics with an overlock seam or zigzag - so the fabric lays down and drapes somewhat worse.
Moscow seam
How to hem a tulle at home? A great way is the so-called Moscow seam.
Perform it as follows:
- Tuck the edges of the curtains by 0.5-1 cm and iron.
- Sew a straight stitch 2 cm from the edge of the hem.
- Cut the excess material of the doorway at a distance of 2 mm from the stitch. The fabric should not crumble.
- Turn the fabric over again, press and sew. Try to get into the first line or make a seam 2 mm from it. In this case, the first seam will remain inside the hem.
Thus, a light, airy edge of the curtains is obtained with a minimum consumption of fabric for the back door.
to contents ↑Slanting edging
Most often, this option is used for processing material with embroidery or tulle mesh.
Important! For him, you will need a special foot, which should be included with the sewing machine. If you do not have it, then you will have to buy it at any of the sewing stores. A snail foot is also suitable. The lower part of the curtain is evenly trimmed, smoothed and tucked when sewing (the edge of the fabric is tucked into the foot).
Slanting inlay can be bought at the store. This is an applied tape with fitted allowances, which performs a decorative function. Sew it as follows:
- Pin the inlay with pins to the bottom edge of the tulle.
- Check the joints.
- Follow the straight stitch.
We process the upper edge
As a rule, the processing of the upper edge of the curtain is done at the very end. Often they use a curtain tape for these purposes - it is both beautiful and convenient. With the help of a curtain tape, or extraphore, you can make various folds and draperies:
- Measure the desired length of the curtain. For practicality, you should make it 10 cm less than the distance from the cornice to the floor, however, some people like curtains “on the floor”.
- Leave a 2 cm allowance for the required length.
- Buy curtain tape based on the width of the curtain, plus approximately 5 cm but side hem.
- Tulle is placed face down and tucked 2 cm, and then smoothed.
- Curtain tape is applied to the gateway. The eyelets and laces are outside.
- The tape is pinned with pins and a stitch is performed at a distance of 3 mm from the top edge of the curtain.
- Reaching the edge, the cords are freed, and the tape allowance is tucked 2 cm inward on each side.
- On the lower edge of the tape perform the second line, also indented by 2 mm.
- The curtain is smoothed and pulled together with a tape to the desired fold configuration.
That's all, the curtain is ready to take its place on the window to delight you with its beauty!

Summing up, I would like to say that if you purchase curtains in the store, and do not sew them on order, then most likely you will have to properly sew the curtains and tulle with your own hands. For these purposes, you will need a sewing machine.Of course, you can also sew seams manually, but it is very time-consuming.
