What do you need?

To make a soft headboard for the bed with your own hands, you may not need to buy anything. You can see what you have left from the apartment renovation, as well as look into your cabinet where there are various items for needlework.

Soft headboard for a bed made of foam

The simplest do-it-yourself headboard can be made from soft foam. This “foam” is often used for gluing walls where good sound insulation is required. Tourists love “foam” - this is exactly what bedding is made of. And in the hardware store you can always buy an inexpensive bath mat made of exactly the same material.

For work you will need:

• a large piece of paper or cardboard for the patterns;
• ball pen;
• very sharp knife:
• tape measure or tape;
• ruler;
• universal glue.

No sketch needed

If this is your first time doing this, do not chase the form. It’s better to do something simple, but elegant, rather than sloppy - a complex subject.

Important! It’s easy to work with foams, but this lesson has its own characteristics - the slices must be very even. Such a headboard is best done strictly along the contour of the back - more precisely, that part of it that rises above the mattress.

Operating procedure:

1. Measure this part - the width must be measured strictly horizontally, and the height - from the top of the back to the top of the mattress, plus another 5 cm.
2. You can draw a rectangle directly on the “foam”, but it’s more convenient to do it on a graph paper sheet - so you can strictly withstand the corners.
3. Cut the workpiece from the “foam” - this is best done with a knife on a metal ruler.
4. Lay the workpiece with the wrong side up.
5. Thoroughly coat with universal glue.
6. Stick the headboard to the headboard on the side of the mattress.

Advantages and disadvantages:

• The main advantage of such a headboard is that very quickly you can radically change the appearance of your bed due to a convenient addition. Soft foams come in different thicknesses, which is very convenient.

How to paste over the edges?

Headboard for curly back

How to make a headboard with your own hands if the headboard is curly? From soft foam - in the same way, only it is necessary to pay more attention to the manufacture of patterns. To do this, carefully circle the back. It is better to use thin but rigid cardboard. The size of the sheet should be larger than the size of the back.

Operating procedure:

1. Glue the sheet of cardboard to the back with ordinary tape so that the edges protrude beyond the edges.

Leather and foam

Did you find a large piece of skin? Sumptuously! You can make a more complex headboard with your own hands.

Preparation of materials:

• To begin with, of course, the skin needs to be renewed - cleaned of dirt and tinted with a special dye, if abrasions are suddenly found. Small pieces are suitable for decoration.
• For filling, it is best to use sheet foam rubber.
• You will need more skin glue or wallpaper nails.

Draw a sketch

Much depends on what size headboard you need - whether it will cover the entire back or if you just want to draw a fragment of it in this way.

Important! The first option is suitable for flat surfaces, the second - for those that have a border or recess in the middle.

To begin, draw the back itself to scale. Pay attention to the shape of the top and side edges. If the piece of leather or leatherette is large, the headboard is best made from a single piece - more precisely, even from two, since the outer part of the backrest must also be designed (however, this can be done in other ways).

Important! Come up with decorative elements. No need to get involved in complex ornaments, it is better to choose a pattern consisting of fragments of a simple shape - leaflets, geometric shapes, etc. Just figure out how these elements will be located on the finished product.

We make a pattern

Carefully measure the back and draw its contours in full size. If it is curly, attach a piece of cardboard to the part and circle it carefully. Think about how you will mount your headboard - on glue or on wallpaper nails.

Farther:

1. Cut the pattern.
2. Strictly on the pattern cut out the foam rubber.
3. Lay a piece of leather face up.
4. Apply the pattern and circle the ballpoint pen.
5. On each side, leave allowances equal to the thickness of foam rubber folded together, the thickness of the back, plus another 5-10 cm - it is better to circle each increase in a separate line: you will get several squares one in the other - inner, middle (in terms of foam rubber thickness) and extreme (in back thickness).
6. From the corners of the extreme square, draw perpendiculars on both sides - you will get small squares that need to be cut.

The main blank is, now we need to think about how to close the outer side of the back, if necessary. You can cut a leather square that fits your size.

Important! If the material is hard, allowances can not be left, but cut it strictly along the contour. Thin and soft skin is better to bend.

Putting the headboard

If you are going to decorate your headboard, it is more convenient to do this before you assemble all the details together. Ornament elements can be glued or sewn. Further, the procedure will be as follows:

1. Stick on the foam pad.
2. Wait until it dries - this will happen quite quickly, especially since you only need to smear it on the contour with glue.

As for fixing the main part, there are options.

3. Glue the allowances.

Option 2

Leather bed

If you made your first large leather product, you already know how to leather your bed with your own hands. It will even be a little easier than inventing the original headboard. The main difficulty is to find such a large piece that is enough for the whole bed is quite problematic, so you have to stitch it from smaller fragments. This rule applies here - first you need to get a large cloth, and only then cut from it.

Important! It is not difficult to make a blank - the bed itself has a fairly simple shape, it is only important to measure it correctly. To practice, try to first cut out the workpiece from some cheap material and attach it to the mattress (for example, on adhesive tape).

If everything worked out, just transfer the fabric blank to the skin. And the fabric will not disappear, you can always sew something from such a large piece.

Operating procedure:

1. Designate a place for nails - ordinary or wallpaper.
2. Put a leather blank on the bed - if the mattress can be removed, it is better to do this and put it on the sidewall, then it will be much more convenient to work.
3. Fix the edges of the upholstery with tape (single-sided).
4. And then it remains only to drive carnations in turn.

In fact, nothing more is needed - the skin holds its shape perfectly. In addition, since the lower part of the mattress is not visible, it can not be masked. Decorate the second back as you would the first (you can do without foam), and your leather bed will be ready with your own hands.

This stage of work is no different from what was offered for the skin. True, there is one caveat - it will still be better to bend or cut the sections, and the back contours drawn on the workpiece should be such that they are very clearly visible.

Button marking

To get started, count the buttons. It is better to sew them at regular intervals, and for this you need to mark the workpiece:

1. Lay the workpiece toward you with the side on which the lines are visible.
2. Mark the top horizontal line into equal segments.
3. Do the same thing horizontally, with the dots must be exactly opposite.
4. Mark the sides as well - the buttons will be at the intersections.

We tighten the buttons

Before making the headboard for the bed with your own hands with buttons, you should take care of the buttons themselves. There are two ways to cover them with fabric:

Option 2

In this case, you can cut circles strictly according to the diameter of the buttons - you get overlays. Each need to stick on the surface of the buttons.

Important! This option is good if you have a very thick fabric, perfect in color to the buttons.

We fit the headboard

When all the buttons are ready, you can start sewing them. Try to keep them firmly - when the headboard is ready, sewing off the torn off elements will not be so convenient.

Put the finished part on the prepared back, bend the allowances on the outside and glue. Close the outside - there are several options.

Design options for the outer part

Closing slices with the same material is the easiest way. But there are others. Knowing them, you can make not only the headboard, but also the headboard for the bed with your own hands.
