Unfortunately, the traces of the handle are very difficult to remove, especially if you do not do it right away. Fresh ink stains are much easier to clean. In the fight against ink, simple home remedies "perfectly" showed themselves. Here are just a few of them.
Soda
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is perfect for cleaning any surface because it has light abrasive properties. The tool is safe enough to remove ink stains from wooden surfaces.
Use soda to remove ink as follows:
- Take 0.5 cups of water and add soda. As a result, you should get a pasty mixture.
- Apply the mixture to the stain. Rub the paste with your fingers so that it completely covers the dirt.
- Leave the product for 15-20 minutes. During this time, soda will do its job, and you will not need to wipe the stain from the handle.
- Remove the paste with a soft cloth dampened with water.
- If the stain is large and could not be removed the first time, repeat the process.
- Wipe the wooden surface with a dry, soft cloth.
Dishwashing liquid
This method is most effective for removing fresh ink stains. As you know, a dishwashing detergent perfectly copes with grease, so it is perfect for removing ink, in addition, it will not allow a fresh stain to soak into the wood. However, before using the product, be sure to check its effect on an inconspicuous piece of furniture.
Step-by-step instructions for the use of detergent:
- Prepare a solution: Mix ½ teaspoon of detergent with ⅓ cup of hot water.
- Mix the solution thoroughly to make a lot of foam.
- Put a soap solution on a cotton pad, check the effect of the drug on an inconspicuous piece of furniture. If the solution does not spoil the wood, then proceed to the process of removing stains on the entire surface.
- Dip a soft cloth into the foam (not into the solution itself), gently wipe the dirt with a rag and soapy foam.
- Use a clean, damp cloth to remove the mortar from the tree.
- Wipe the furniture dry with a dry cloth.
White Spirit
Before using white spirit (turpentine substitute), check its effect on an inconspicuous area of a wooden surface. Dampen a cotton pad in white spirit and wipe the surface in an inconspicuous place. If the topcoat is not damaged in this case, then you can use this method as follows:
- Dampen the cloth in white spirit.
- Wipe the contaminated area with a cloth.
- Remove the product with a damp, clean cloth.
Bleach
Bleaches can be used to remove ink stains from a wooden surface. However, when using aggressive agents, you should adhere to safety rules and responsibly approach the choice of bleach:
- Conventional household bleach containing chlorine perfectly removes any impurities.
- Another option would be a bleach containing oxalic acid, which is great for removing ink.
- You can use two-phase bleach for wood.
All of these drugs can be purchased at the hardware store. Use them according to the instructions. After treatment, rinse the area with clean water and wipe with a dry towel. If necessary (if the varnish or other coating has been removed), coat the surface with varnish in a day.
Important! Do not mix bleach with detergent, as this may produce toxic gas. Do not use ammonia on a wooden surface; otherwise, the color of the wood may change.
Advice:
- If you were unable to remove the handle from the furniture as described above, then use a No. 000 metal washcloth dipped in liquid wax. A metal washcloth is able to remove a thin layer of the surface. However, gently wipe the wood with a washcloth so as not to remove a thick layer of the surface. After cleaning, wipe the treated area with a clean cloth to remove dirt. If you notice the formation of scratches on the surface, follow the link and follow the tips from our article “Removing Scratches on Furniture”.
- If during the cleaning process you removed the top layer of the wooden surface, then treat the surface with varnish. If this is not necessary, then just polish the treated area. Find out in our separate post how to make do-it-yourself polish for furniture.
