We sew a cloak with a hood

To begin, we will prepare the necessary materials and tools:

  • Fleece required length (1.5 meters wide).
  • Threads in tone of material.
  • Scissors.
  • Sewing centimeter.
  • Pins for chipping.
  • Button.
  • Sewing machine.

Which material to choose?

  • For sewing wraps, paraffin or teflon fabrics and membrane materials are most often used.
  • Raincoats are sewn not only from water-repellent and windproof fabrics, but also from materials such as velveteen, velvet, leather (natural and artificial), suede, cotton, raincoat fabric and others.
  • Women's modern raincoats are also sewn from no less attractive synthetic materials: spandex, nylon and bonding. Products made from such raw materials are durable and well repel moisture, which is important in wet weather.

Important! If acetate is included in the cover material, polyester or polyamide, then such clothes will practically not wrinkle.

How to sew a cloak?

So, we begin work:

  1. We lay out the material on a flat surface and cut out a rectangular part, suitable in size for the one to sew the cloak. At short edges, leave allowances for seams.
  2. Now we need to shape our clothes, which have semicircular edges along the bottom of the product. To do this, fold the fabric in half and trim the corners, giving the edges a circle as desired.
  3. Next, we should make a blank for the future hood. To do this, try on the fabric on the model (adult or child) and make a chalk mark in the neck. The part that is located on the shoulders will be our future hood for the cloak. After that, with pins we collect the marked line into folds and make a seam on the sewing machine. Ultimately, we will have the shape of the yet unfinished hood.
  4. After marking the assembled line, we proceed to the processing of the upper edge of our hood. To do this, fold up the material in half with the wrong side outward, and the front inward. We spend the diagonal seam of the hood for the cloak. If unnecessary fabric has formed inside, then trim it carefully with scissors. So, we got a whole cape, from which we formed the main part - a cloak, and the additional - a hood.
  5. It remains only to sew a beautiful button, which will fix the upper part so that the hood does not fall from the head. To do this, we sew a button on one of its lower edges, and on the other - we make a hole or just sew a buttonhole.

Important! We want to note that in our training lesson for sewing a raincoat we used fleece, which does not need additional edge treatment, which is very convenient for beginners. If you want to use another material, be sure to close the protruding threads manually or in an overlock method.

How to sew a cloak without a hood?

This option is suitable for those who just want a cloak without a hood. Such clothes will most likely serve as a stylish addition to the main look. Now such raincoats are a trend of the season.

First way

This method is the easiest of all. In this case, the cloak can be sewn in literally 15 minutes.

We take the following materials for work:

  • The fabric to choose from (the length is slightly less than its own height, and the width is -1.5 meters.)
  • Lace.
  • Threads to match the product.
  • Ordinary needle.
  • Scissors.
  • Sewing machine.

Step-by-step algorithm of actions:

  1. For the base, we take a piece of rectangular-shaped fabric, where the length depends on your own preferences. Usually the length of the cloak to the knee or slightly higher.
  2. On one side of the canvas we make a drawstring, making a line on both sides to form an empty hole. After that, insert the lace into the resulting empty tube.
  3. We tuck the upper and lower edges of the cloak, process it with machine stitching.
  4. At will, we decorate the edges with a decorative ribbon or rhinestones.

That's all! A simple cloak is ready for faithful service to its master!

Important! How to sew a cloak with a hood using this method? Everything is very simple! To do this, sew a cloak separately, and then a hood, and sew two pieces together.

Second option

For the base, we take a fabric in the form of a semicircle, where the length should be no more than 1.3 meters. The double length of the cloak is the required amount of fabric. For example, if we want to sew a raincoat 1 meter long, then we need to take a fabric 2 meters of suitable material. The length of the cloak should be the same as the width of the fabric. Most often it is 1.5 meters. If you take the fabric already, the cloak will be more fitted, and not free. Again, it all depends on your design ideas.

Description of a quick way to sew a cloak without a hood:

  • So, we take a 3-meter fabric rectangle and with scissors we form a semicircle with a radius of about 15 cm. This part will be in the throat area. At first glance, this is a large cutout, but we need just such a hole so that later it can be picked up and nicely placed on the shoulders.
  • We form folds on top of the fabric, make a seam with a sewing machine.

Important! Do not forget to periodically try on a wrap to properly form a puff that should perfectly fit the figure.

  • We only need to process the bottom of the cape.

Just three steps, and the do-it-yourself cloak is ready!

How can the bottom of the product be processed?

Since there will be an edge on the floors of the cloak, they can not be processed. But we advise to hem it in order to give the clothes a complete aesthetic appearance:

  • You can bend the edge twice and lay a line.
  • Treat the edge with a special tape - inlay. It is designed to hide and keep the bottom of the fabric from possible damage.
  • An overlock machine will help prevent material shedding. But first, you need to find someone who can properly refuel it.
  • Set the zigzag stitch on your sewing machine and go around the edge of the cape, thereby securing the edges of the product.
  • Buy a wide satin ribbon, bend the edges inward to form two equal parts. After that, put the edge of the cloak in the center of the tape and sew in the usual way. So the bottom of the product will be closed, and the tape will successfully emphasize the line.

Important! We strongly recommend that the bottom of the cloak be treated with the above methods. This does not take much time, but only saves it, since you do not have to hand over clothes for repairs or fix the breakdown yourself.

How to sew a hood for a raincoat separately?

Now we will consider 3 main ways of a pattern for tailoring a hood. And which of them to stop on - you decide.

For sewing, stock up as follows:

  • A piece of fabric to choose from.
  • Threads of the corresponding shade.
  • Needle for basting.
  • Sewing machine and related materials.
  • Elements for decoration - ribbon, braid, beads, beads.

First option

In this case, you have a little painstaking, but very simple work

We start to tailor the hood:

  1. From the selected fabric cut, we cut out a circle, the diameter of which will depend on the size of the desired cloak.
  2. Next, you need to cut the circle in a straight line to the center.
  3. Now we make a cutout for the neck of the product. Please note that it does not have to be placed strictly in the central part of the hood.
  4. Fold the second piece of canvas in half and mark the rectangle with a chalk, the width of which should be equal to the floor girth of the neck, and the height to the desired height of the hood.

Our hood is ready! It remains only to stitch it to the cloak, beautifully handle the upper edge and sew a spectacular clasp.

  1. On paper, form the size and shape of the pattern, based on your wishes.

  3. Attach the pattern to the canvas, circle with soap and cut the part.
  4. Now unfold the fabric, process the edges in any way.
  5. Attach a line and outline the neckline with a dashed line.
  6. Next, sew decorative tape on the bottom of the hood. With tailor pins, assemble it and sew it on a typewriter, leaving the edges for tying, about 10-15 cm.
  7. At the ends of the tape we fix beads or special terminal clamps.
  8. Now you can sew the hood to the cloak and enjoy its beauty.

The third option:

  1. We pick up two identical rectangular pieces of fabric, where the length is 40 cm and the width is 35 cm.
  2. Next, you need to cut two corners.
  3. Now measure the length of the neck and draw the bottom of the future hood.
  4. At the end, we cut off the excess fabric and sew the product to the cloak.

Important! To prevent the hood from falling off your head, we recommend securing it with studs or invisible in two or three places. So you will not be often distracted to correct it.

Tailoring recommendations

In the matter of how to sew a cloak a cloak with a hood with your own hands, our useful tips will help you:

  • If you decide to make a do-it-yourself cloak with sleeves, then the bottom needs to be supplemented with cuffs. To do this, cut strips 15 cm wide, where the length is equal to your girth of the wrist. Then we fold them and sew them: short pieces - to the sleeves of the cloak, and long - to its shelves. Fix the distance with a button or button.
  • If you will sew a cloak from two pieces of fabric, then for the pattern of the hood you need to take 40-45 cm of fabric. And if you want to sew a collar for a cloak, then add another 15-20 cm of material.
  • In order for the edges of your new thing not to fall asleep, in no case do not buy a loose cloth for this type of clothing. Stop your choice on a denser, but at the same time soft fabric, the edges of which can not be processed. Just do not sew a raincoat made of artificial leather, which will quickly deteriorate, and in places of movement (under your arms, side seams, pockets) it will crumble strongly.
